Four things that change a landscaping quote here, and nowhere else.
Two seasons, one crew
Your landscaper is your snow contractor
Neither half of the year fills it on its own, so the same crews do both across the GTA. It is why winter contracts are signed in September, and why a landscaper you like in July is worth keeping for January.
The trigger depth
A snow contract without a trigger is not a contract
The snowfall depth that obliges the contractor to turn up is the term that actually matters, and the one most often left unstated. Two quotes with the same seasonal price and different triggers are not the same product.
Chloride rules
Salt is measured now, not shovelled
Ontario runoff concerns and simple cost have pushed the region toward measured application and brine pre-treatment. Whether salt is included, and how it is applied, is a real line item here in a way it is not in a milder market.
A short build window
Hardscaping fits between two frozen grounds
Patios, walls and walkways can only be built between thaw and freeze, so the good crews are fully booked from the first warm week. A May enquiry for a June patio is usually a September patio.
What a landscaping visit usually includes
- Clearing and disposing of green waste generated on the day
- Edging along beds, walks and the driveway
- Cutting back and tidying existing planting
- Blowing down hard surfaces before leaving
- For snow: driveway, main walkway and the steps
Hauling a full cleanup away is usually quoted on top; a City collection will not take it all at once.

When should I sign a snow contract?
September or early October. The crews that do your landscaping do your snow, and the good ones are committed before the first fall. Signing in January means choosing from whoever is left.
Seasonal contract or per visit?
A seasonal price covers the whole winter whatever falls; per visit prices each clearing. In a GTA winter both sides are taking a real bet, so the term that matters more than the rate is the trigger depth that obliges them to turn up.
Is salt included?
Ask explicitly, and ask whether it is per application or per season. Measured application and brine pre-treatment are now normal here, partly on cost and partly because chloride runoff is a genuine Ontario issue — and over-salting damages the concrete and lawn edge it is meant to protect.
When can hard landscaping actually be built?
Between the ground thawing and the ground freezing, which is a short window here and fully booked from the first warm week. An enquiry in May is usually a build in late summer.
Will they take the yard waste away?
Only if you agreed it. A real cleanup produces more than a City collection takes at once, so decide up front between hauling, staging across two pickups, or bagging and leaving — it moves the price more than the lawn size does.
