Landscaping in the GTA is really two businesses sharing a truck. From April to November it is design, build, planting and cleanup; from December to March it is snow. The same crews do both because neither half fills a year on its own, and that single fact explains most of how the market behaves — including why a good contractor wants your winter commitment in September, and why the ones still taking snow contracts in January are the ones nobody booked earlier.
The snow half is where the money and the risk sit. A seasonal contract prices the whole winter regardless of how much falls, and a per-visit rate prices each clearing — and in a GTA winter the difference between a mild year and a hard one is large enough that both sides are taking a real bet. What matters more than the rate is the trigger: the snowfall depth at which the contractor is obliged to turn up. A contract with no stated trigger is not a contract, it is a hope, and it is the single most common thing people fail to check before signing in October.
Salt has become the other negotiation. Municipalities and contractors across the region have moved toward measured application rather than volume, partly for cost and partly because chloride runoff is now a genuine issue in Ontario watersheds, and partly because over-salting destroys the very concrete and lawn edge it is protecting. Ask whether salt is included, per application or per season, and whether they use a brine pre-treatment — the honest answer to that question tells you a lot about who you are hiring.
On the growing side, the compressed season means timing beats technique almost every time. Hard landscaping — patios, walls, walkways — has to be done between the ground thawing and the ground freezing, and the good crews are booked out from the first warm week. Planting works best in spring and early autumn; new sod can go down through the season but lives or dies on three weeks of watering that somebody has to actually do. September is the aeration and overseeding window here, because cool nights and warm soil establish grass before winter in a way spring seeding rarely beats crabgrass to.
Access and disposal decide more quotes than people expect. A back garden reachable only through the house rules out every wheeled machine and turns a half-day into a full one. Yard waste from a real cleanup routinely exceeds what a City collection takes at once, so decide up front whether the crew is hauling it, staging it across two pickups, or bagging it and leaving it. That one answer moves a landscaping price more than the size of the lawn does.

A snow contract without a trigger is not a contract
The snowfall depth that obliges the contractor to turn up is the term that actually matters, and the one most often left unstated. Two quotes with the same seasonal price and different triggers are not the same product.
