A GTA pool has a short season and two hard edges, and almost everything expensive that happens to one happens at those edges. Opening in May and closing in October are not routine visits; they are the two tasks that decide whether the pool survives the winter and whether the water is usable in June. Between them, weekly or fortnightly service is genuinely routine — chemistry, skimming, vacuuming, backwashing — and it is the part most people can do themselves if they want to.
Closing is the one to get right, because a Toronto winter is unforgiving of a bad one. Water left in the lines freezes and splits them, and a cracked return line under a deck is a spring excavation rather than a repair. A proper closing balances the chemistry first, lowers the level below the returns, blows the lines clear and plugs them, winterises the pump, heater and filter, and covers the pool. Every one of those steps exists because of something that breaks when it is skipped, and none of them is visible in April.
Opening is where you find out. A pool that was closed well opens clear and balanced in a few days; one that was not opens green, and clearing it means shocking, running the filter continuously and sometimes draining and refilling — which on a city water supply is not a small bill. Booking the opening early matters for the same reason booking the closing early does: the region's pool season is roughly five months and every pool wants the same two weeks at each end of it.
