When should I open and close a GTA pool?
Opening usually happens in May and closing in October, though people open earlier to let the water clear before the weather is warm enough to swim. Both windows are short and the whole region wants them, so booking early is worth more here than in a climate with a longer season.
What happens if the pool is closed badly?
The expensive version is water left in the lines, which freezes, expands and splits them — and a cracked return line under a deck or patio is an excavation rather than a repair. The cheaper version is a pool that opens green in spring, which means shocking, continuous filtering, and sometimes draining and refilling on city water.
Can I do the weekly maintenance myself?
Many people do, and it is the reasonable part to take on — skimming, brushing, vacuuming, testing and adjusting chemistry, backwashing the filter. The opening and closing are the ones worth having done, because those are where a mistake costs equipment rather than a weekend.
My pool opened green. Is that a problem?
It is a job rather than a disaster. Green usually means the chemistry lapsed under the cover over winter. Recovery is shocking, running the filter continuously for several days and rebalancing; occasionally, if it has gone far enough, a partial drain and refill. Say it is green when you post — it is a different visit from a routine opening.
Does my pool fence need to meet a specific standard?
Yes, and it is stricter than the rules for an ordinary fence. GTA municipalities regulate pool enclosures separately, covering height, gaps and a gate that self-closes and self-latches. If your fence predates the pool or has been modified since, it is worth confirming it still complies.
