Tax, in three
sentences.

Nobody else explains this, so people end up guessing. Here’s what you need to know as a Tasker in Ontario.

You’re independent

You work for yourself, not for Taskly. What you earn counts as self-employment income on your tax return.

Put some aside

No tax is taken off your payouts. Many people move part of each payout into savings so April isn’t a surprise.

HST only past $30,000

You only need to register for HST once your earnings pass $30,000 in a calendar quarter or across four quarters in a row.

Does it cost anything to join?
No. Signing up, verifying your ID and making offers are all free. We take 20% only when a task is done, and never anything up front.
How much do I keep?
80% of the price you agree, plus 100% of tips. The customer pays a small platform fee on top, and it never comes out of your pay.
When do I get paid?
The customer pays when they hire you and Taskly holds it. It’s released when they confirm the work, or automatically after 3 days, then reaches your bank in 2–3 business days.
How do I get my first task with no reviews?
While we’re new, we personally help each new Tasker land their first task. A full profile, a clear photo and specific offers help too. Starting with smaller tasks builds reviews fast.
Who can become a Tasker?
Anyone 18 or older who can verify their ID and work in the GTA. Most tasks need no trade licence, and Taskly has tasks for careers, lessons, cooking, tech and celebrations as well as hands-on work.
Do I choose my tasks and prices?
Yes. Nobody assigns you work. You make offers on the tasks you want, at the price you set.
What if a customer disputes the work?
The money stays held while it’s sorted out. Both sides share what happened, and a real person at Taskly decides: full payment, a split, or a refund. There’s never a dispute fee.
Do I need insurance?
Taskly doesn’t provide insurance. You work as an independent Tasker, and carrying your own cover is up to you. It isn’t required to start.
Do I have to pay tax on what I earn?
Yes, as self-employment income. HST registration only applies once you pass $30,000 in a calendar quarter or across four quarters in a row. The CRA’s guide has the details.
