What does snow removal cost in the GTA?

Snow removal — snow plowing on the taxonomy label, but almost nobody searches it that way — is bought per visit or on a seasonal contract from about November to April. Price follows the driveway shape rather than its size, and the ridge the municipal plough leaves across it is the part most quotes leave ambiguous.

Ranges come from the same pricing engine a real task is quoted against, per visit. A seasonal contract is a different shape of deal and is agreed between you and the Tasker. How we price

What a driveway visit should cover

Salting, side paths, balconies and roofs are usually separate. Naming them in your post is the difference between two comparable quotes and two that are not.

The windrow is the part nobody prices

When a municipal plough passes your street it pushes a ridge of packed snow across the end of every driveway on it, and that ridge arrives after you have already cleared. It is the densest snow of the storm — road spray, salt and ice compacted by a truck — and it is where most winter back injuries in this city come from. Every GTA driveway quote either includes it or assumes you will handle it, and the two are not comparable prices. Ask.

Shape matters more than size

A flat two-car pad beside the road is quick. A long shared laneway, a drive sloping down to a garage below grade, or one ending at a set of steps takes longer and carries more risk of damage. Interlock and stamped concrete cost more to clear than asphalt because a steel blade cannot be dragged across them — the operator lifts, or uses a rubber edge, and both are slower. Add a walkway, front steps and a side path and you have roughly doubled the driveway alone.

Questions

Move-out cleaning questions

The ones this page owns — the rest live on the cleaning page.

Is a seasonal contract cheaper than paying per storm?

It depends on the winter, and neither party knows which one is coming. In a light season per-visit costs less; in a heavy one the contract does. The reliable thing a contract buys is a guaranteed slot on the morning after a storm, when every operator in the region is already booked.

What is the ridge at the end of my driveway?

The windrow — packed snow pushed across your driveway by the municipal plough as it passes, arriving after you have cleared. It is the heaviest snow of the storm. Some quotes include clearing it and some assume you will, which is why two prices that look alike often are not.

When should I book?

Before the first snow. Seasonal contracts are largely filled by late autumn, and the first real storm is when every remaining operator is called at once. Even for per-visit work, posting before the forecast rather than after it is the difference between a morning slot and an afternoon one.

Will salt damage my driveway?

Over time it is hard on interlock and concrete, it kills the grass it washes into, and it tracks indoors. Sand on walkways with salt only on the driveway apron is a common compromise. It is also worth knowing rock salt does very little below about minus twelve, so the coldest nights need a different product entirely.
