Other things people post
Not what you came for? These are jobs Taskers pick up across the GTA — one post gets you offers on any of them.

The list on the fridge
The shelf that never went up, the door that sticks, the light that flickers — one visit instead of three.
Post this task
A garage you can park in
Sort, shelve and haul away what is left, so the car actually fits before the snow arrives.
Post this task
A week of dinners, cooked
A cook fills the fridge for the week — your list, your dietary needs, containers labelled.
Post this task
Before the first snow
Gutters cleared, hoses drained and the walk ready, so December is not the first time anyone looks.
Post this taskWhat construction and renovation work actually costs here, and why
Construction is the category where the biggest mistakes are made before any work starts, and almost all of them are the same mistake: comparing quotes that are not describing the same job. Three contractors asked to price "a basement renovation" will return three different numbers because they have imagined three different renovations — one with a bathroom, one without, one that assumes you have already decided on flooring. The number is not the useful part of a quote. The scope is, and a quote with no itemised scope is not cheap or expensive, it is unreadable.
The permit question is the second thing to settle, and in the GTA it is not optional. Structural changes, anything touching a load-bearing wall, additions, decks above a certain height, and most basement apartments require a building permit from your municipality, and the drawings usually require a qualified designer or engineer. Electrical work is separately governed by the ESA. Gas is TSSA. A contractor who suggests skipping the permit is not saving you money — they are moving a liability onto you that surfaces at resale, at insurance-claim time, or when a neighbour calls the city. Ask who is pulling the permit and get the answer in writing.
What a Tasker genuinely does here is a real and useful list, and it is not the whole build. Demolition and strip-out, driveway repair and sealing, patios, pergolas, gazebos, sheds, feature walls, fences and outdoor structures, site clearing, and the labour around a trade rather than the licensed part of it. Those are pieces of work with a defined start and end that one competent person or a small crew can complete, and they are what this platform is good at. A full home addition is a general-contractor engagement with drawings, permits and a schedule of trades, and it should be procured as one.
When you do compare quotes, compare them on the same five things: what is included, what is explicitly excluded, who supplies materials, what the payment schedule is, and what happens when something is discovered behind a wall. That last one is the honest test. Every renovation of an older GTA house finds something — knob-and-tube, a beam that is not where the drawings said, asbestos in a floor adhesive — and a contractor who has a clear answer for how a change order gets priced and approved is a contractor who has done this before.

Local knowledge
Priced for how the GTA actually lives
Four things that change a construction and renovation work quote here, and nowhere else.
Scope, not price
Three quotes for one job are usually three different pieces of work
A number without an itemised scope is unreadable — it is not cheap or expensive, it is undefined. Ask each contractor for what is included, what is excluded and who supplies materials, and the quotes become comparable for the first time.
Permits
Structural work needs a permit, and skipping it moves the risk to you
Load-bearing changes, additions, decks above a set height and most basement apartments need a municipal building permit, and the drawings usually need a qualified designer. It surfaces at resale, at claim time, or when somebody calls the city. Ask who is pulling it.
Licensed trades
Electrical is ESA, gas is TSSA, and neither is negotiable
Those parts of a build are governed separately from the build itself, and a general crew is not permitted to do them. A quote that quietly includes them is not a better price — it is a different and non-compliant job.
Older housing stock
Every GTA renovation finds something behind the wall
Knob-and-tube, a beam that is not where the drawings said, asbestos in an old floor adhesive. The question is not whether it happens but how a change order gets priced and approved when it does — and having that answer is what separates an experienced contractor from a cheap one.
Ask every contractor these five
- What is included, and what is explicitly excluded
- Who is pulling the permit, and is it in the price
- Who supplies materials, and at whose cost
- What the payment schedule is against what milestones
- How a change order is priced and approved when something is found

Questions
Frequently asked
GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.
Do I need a building permit for my renovation?
For anything structural, an addition, a deck above a set height or most basement apartments, yes — from your municipality, usually with drawings from a qualified designer. Cosmetic work generally does not. Ask the contractor who is pulling it and get the answer in writing before work starts.
Why are my three quotes so different?
Almost always because they are pricing three different pieces of work. One included a bathroom, one assumed you supply the flooring, one left out making good afterwards. Ask each for an itemised scope with exclusions listed, and compare those rather than the totals.
Can a Tasker do electrical or gas work?
No. Electrical work in Ontario is governed by the ESA and gas work by the TSSA, and both require a certified trade. What a Tasker does is everything around that — demolition, prep, carpentry, outdoor builds, finishing — which is a long and genuinely useful list.
What is a change order and why does it matter?
It is how extra work gets agreed once the job has started, and it matters because every renovation of an older GTA house finds something. Ask before signing how additional work is priced and who approves it. A contractor with a clear process has done this before.
Should I pay a deposit?
A materials deposit is normal on a larger build; paying most of the job up front is not. Prefer a schedule tied to milestones you can see. On Taskly the money for a task is held until the work is done, which is a different arrangement from a direct-to-contractor deposit.
