What junk removal actually costs here, and why

Junk removal is priced by volume and by labour, and the two do not always move together. A single mattress carried down from a third-floor walk-up can cost more than a garage of flattened boxes wheeled straight into a van, because what you are buying is the space it takes in the truck plus the effort of getting it there. Anyone quoting you before they know which floor it is on, and whether there is an elevator, is guessing.

The reason this job exists in the GTA at all is that municipal collection stops well short of what a household actually needs to get rid of. Toronto takes a small number of oversized items on a scheduled pickup and will not take renovation debris, and the Region of Peel, York and Durham each run their own rules and their own drop-off depots with their own hours. A load that is legal to leave at the curb in one city is a fine in the next one over, which is why the answer to "can I just put it out?" is almost always local.

Landfill and transfer fees are a real part of the price rather than a markup. A GTA transfer station charges by weight, so a load of soil, brick or plaster costs more to dispose of than the same volume of furniture, and a Tasker who quotes you a flat price without asking what is in the pile is carrying that risk themselves — which usually means the quote is padded. Say what the material is and you will get a tighter number.

Condos are their own job. Most downtown and Mississauga towers require a service-lift booking, restrict moving hours to weekday daytime, and will not allow a loading-dock stop without notice to the property manager. That booking is frequently the constraint on the whole day, not the hauling, and it is the single most common reason a junk job gets rescheduled rather than done. Book the elevator before you book the Tasker.

Not everything in a pile is junk. Appliances and electronics have their own end-of-life routes in Ontario, refrigerant-bearing units need degassing by someone certified before they can be scrapped, and anything containing asbestos is not a hauling job at all — it is a licensed abatement job. A good offer will separate those items out and say so rather than quietly agreeing to take everything.

Questions

Frequently asked

GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

Can I just put it out for City collection?

Sometimes, and it is worth checking first. Toronto takes a limited number of oversized items on a scheduled pickup, but not renovation debris, and Peel, York and Durham each set their own rules. If your items qualify, the cheapest junk removal is the one you do not book.

Why does the quote change once they see it?

Because volume and weight are what is actually being bought, and neither is visible in a text description. Photos of the pile, the floor it is on and whether there is an elevator will get you a number that holds.

Is the dump fee included?

Ask explicitly. Transfer stations charge by tonne, so most offers quote labour and transport with disposal added at cost. That is normal and honest — a flat price that never mentions weight is the one to question.

What happens to things that are still usable?

Say in the post that you want donations separated and most Taskers will drop them on the way. It is not automatic, because a donation stop takes time and some charities will not accept upholstered items.

Can they take a fridge or an air conditioner?

They can move it, but refrigerant has to be removed by a certified technician before the unit is scrapped. Expect that handled as a separate step rather than folded into a hauling price.

What about asbestos?

That is licensed abatement work in Ontario, not junk removal, and no Tasker should agree to haul it. Old vinyl tile, pipe wrap and some textured ceilings are the usual sources — if it is suspected, get it tested before anything is disturbed.
