What glass repair and glazing actually costs here, and why

Start by separating three things that get searched with the same words, because sending yourself to the wrong trade is the most expensive minute in this category. Replacing the GLASS in a window whose frame is sound is glazing, and it is this page. Replacing the WINDOW — the frame, the flashing, the sill, the opening — is a different purchase with a different method, and it lives on our windows and doors page. Washing the glass is different again. If the frame is solid and the pane is broken, cracked or fogged, you are in the right place; if the wood around it is soft or water is coming in at the sill, the pane was never the problem.

Then the part that matters most, and it is not optional. The Ontario Building Code requires safety glass — tempered or laminated, not ordinary annealed glass — in specific locations: in a door and in the sidelight beside it, in and around a tub or shower enclosure, in a guard or balustrade, and in glazing set low enough for a person to walk into. Those panes are not a more expensive version of the same sheet. Tempered glass also cannot be cut, drilled or notched after it is made, so it is ordered to finished size and it takes days to fabricate. Anyone quoting to put plain glass into one of those openings because it is quicker is quoting the wrong pane, and it is worth asking the question directly.

Structural and engineered glass is a further step out and it is not this category at all. A glass guard on a balcony, a canopy, a glass floor, a structural fin — those are specified elements with engineering behind them. In a GTA condominium they are almost always the corporation’s, along with the exterior face of your windows, so the first call about cracked balcony glass in a tower is to property management rather than to a glazier. Storefront glass is its own trade too: a large tempered or laminated shopfront pane is a crew with suction lifts, and on a Toronto retail street the work usually needs permission from the City before the sidewalk can be occupied to set it.

What is left is a large and genuinely useful category. A cracked pane in a sound wooden or vinyl sash. A sealed double-glazed unit that has fogged between the panes, which cannot be reopened and dried out and is replaced as a whole unit. Glass and mirror cut to size for a shelf, a tabletop, a cabinet door or a bathroom wall. A board-up after a break-in or a storm. Leaded and stained panels in the transoms and front doors of older Toronto houses, which are re-leaded by somebody who does that specific work rather than swapped for float glass.

The sequence in winter is worth knowing before you need it, because it surprises people. A pane is made to measure and a sealed unit is fabricated to order, so neither exists on a shelf. When a window goes in January the honest answer is two visits: a board-up the same evening so the house is closed and warm, then the glass once it is made. Measure or photograph the opening with something for scale, say which storey it is on, say whether the frame is wood, vinyl or aluminum, and say whether the opening is a door, a shower or anything a person could walk into. That last answer decides which glass is legal, which is why a good Tasker asks it first.

Questions

Frequently asked

GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

Can just the glass be replaced, or do I need a new window?

If the frame is sound and square, the glass alone can be replaced, which is much the smaller piece of work. If the sash is rotten, the sill is wet, or water is coming in around the opening, the pane was never the problem and you are looking at window replacement instead.

What is safety glass, and where does Ontario require it?

Tempered or laminated glass rather than ordinary annealed. The Ontario Building Code names the locations: in and beside doors, in and around tubs and showers, in guards, and in glazing low enough to walk into. Say what the opening is when you post, because it decides which glass is legal.

My double-glazed window is foggy inside. Can it be fixed?

Not by drying it out. Misting between the panes means the seal on the insulated unit has failed, and the unit is replaced as a whole made-to-order sealed pane. The frame usually stays. It is a common repair in the GTA and it does not mean the whole window is finished.

Can someone come out tonight for a broken window?

For a board-up, often. For the glass, no — every pane is cut to measure and every sealed unit is fabricated to order, so nothing sits on a shelf. In winter the normal sequence here is boarding the same evening to keep the heat in, then glazing once the pane is made.

Who fixes cracked balcony glass in a condo?

Almost always the corporation, not you. In GTA towers the exterior face of the windows and the balcony guards are the corporation’s element and are maintained on a building schedule. Report it to property management first; hiring privately for a guard is usually not permitted.

Is glass repair the same as window cleaning?

No, and they are separate categories here. Glazing replaces the pane itself. Cleaning washes it, and on a tower the outside face is the building’s to arrange. If your glass is intact and just looks tired, window cleaning is the cheaper and more useful answer.
