Heating in the GTA is not optional equipment. A furnace that fails in January is an emergency in a way a broken dishwasher never is, and that shapes the entire market: the busiest fortnight of the year is the first hard cold snap, prices peak exactly when demand does, and the people who booked a service in September are not the ones calling at 11pm in a power outage. Almost every avoidable furnace bill in this city is a maintenance visit that did not happen in the autumn.
The single most important thing to understand before hiring anyone is where the licensing line falls. In Ontario, work on a gas appliance — the furnace itself, the gas line, the burner, the heat exchanger — must be done by a technician certified under the TSSA, and that is not negotiable, not a formality, and not something to shop around on. Refrigerant work on an air conditioner or heat pump sits under its own certification. A person without those tickets is not permitted to open the appliance, whatever they quote.
What is not licensed work is a much longer list than people assume, and it is where a Tasker is genuinely useful: changing filters on the schedule the manufacturer actually specifies rather than the one you remember, clearing and sealing accessible duct runs, cleaning vents and cold-air returns, fitting and programming a smart thermostat, insulating the basement runs that bleed heat before it reaches the rooms, and clearing the snow away from an exterior intake and exhaust so the furnace does not lock itself out mid-storm. That last one is a GTA-specific job that causes a real share of winter no-heat calls.
Duct cleaning deserves a plain warning, because it is the part of this category with the worst reputation and it earns it. The service is real and worth doing on a house that has been renovated, has visible dust discharge, or has never had it done. It is also the classic bait price: an advertised figure for a handful of vents, then per-vent charges, a furnace-cleaning add-on and a sanitiser upsell delivered at the door. Ask for the total number of vents and returns in writing before anyone arrives, and treat any quote that will not name the count as the beginning of a negotiation you did not agree to.
Age is the honest frame for a repair-or-replace decision. A furnace in the GTA generally runs fifteen to twenty years, and a major repair on a unit past that mark is usually money spent on a delay rather than a fix. Ask what the failed part is, what it costs, what the unit’s age is, and what a replacement would run — a technician who will answer all four plainly is giving you the information to decide, and one who will only quote the repair is not.

Anything touching the furnace, the gas line or the burner needs a TSSA-certified technician. It is not a preference or a formality — an uncertified person is not permitted to open the appliance, and a quote that ignores this is not a cheaper quote, it is a different and illegal job.

Can a Tasker repair my furnace?
Not the gas side of it. Ontario requires a TSSA-certified technician for work on the appliance, the burner or the gas line, and no honest offer will say otherwise. Filters, vents, returns, thermostats, duct insulation and clearing the exterior intake are all genuinely Tasker work.
When should I book the autumn service?
September or early October, before the first hard cold. The fortnight when everyone notices the heat is the fortnight lead times and prices peak across the GTA.
Is duct cleaning worth it?
On a house that has been renovated, shows visible dust from the vents, or has never had it done — yes. Otherwise it is optional. What matters is getting the vent and return COUNT agreed in writing first, because per-vent add-ons at the door are the standard complaint in this category.
Why does my furnace keep shutting off in a storm?
