The band is the floor and ceiling the pricing engine uses for vehicle work across the GTA — the low end is a short mobile visit, the high end a long shop task. It is generated from the price table rather than typed here, so it moves when the table does. It is not an average of past bookings, and it is labour: parts sit on top of it, which is why a diagnosis usually comes before a firm number.

What mechanics and car repair actually costs here, and why

Three vehicle categories sit next to each other and they answer different questions. Car servicing is the schedule — the intervals in the owner’s manual, done by make, whether or not anything is wrong. This page is the fault and the wear: something is making a noise, a light is on, the brakes feel long, the clutch is slipping, the car will not start, plus the parts everyone expects to replace as they wear out. Mobile mechanic is a subset of this one, defined by where the work happens rather than by what it is. And a windscreen or a door glass is its own trade with its own adhesives and cure times, which is also why the glass in your house is a different page again. If you are not sure which you want, describe what the car is doing and let the offers sort it out — diagnosis is a task in its own right and a perfectly reasonable thing to book on its own.

The single most useful line to understand before posting is what can honestly be done where the car is standing, and what needs a hoist, a shop floor and a bench. A driveway or kerbside visit covers a lot: batteries, wipers, bulbs, filters, a diagnostic scan, a jump start, a wheel change on level ground, and on some cars the brakes. What it does not cover is anything needing the vehicle held safely in the air for a long stretch, both sides off the ground at once, a press, a torch, or the front of the engine stripped. A clutch, a timing belt, exhaust work, suspension where a spring is under compression, fuel work under pressure — those are shop tasks, and an offer to do one of them in your driveway is a reason to ask more questions rather than a bargain. Air conditioning is its own case: refrigerant has to be recovered with certified equipment rather than vented or topped up from a can, so a proper regas is shop work whoever is doing it.

Then the piece of Ontario paperwork that catches people out. A Safety Standards Certificate — the inspection needed to register a used vehicle in your own name, or to plate a car brought in from another province — can only be issued by a licensed Motor Vehicle Inspection Station, by a licensed technician, at that station. No visit to your driveway produces one, however competent the mechanic, and no amount of work done elsewhere substitutes for it. Booking somebody to fix what an inspection failed on, and booking the certificate itself, are two separate arrangements, and it is worth being explicit about which one you are asking for.

What actually breaks cars in this region is not the engine, it is the underside. Six months of road salt means brake lines, fuel lines, exhaust systems, subframes and spring seats corrode from below in a way they simply do not in a dry province, and rust is the reason a repair quoted on a part gets quoted again once somebody is underneath it. A seized bolt here is not an excuse, it is the ordinary condition of a ten-year-old car, and a good offer says in advance what happens if a fastener shears — because on something eventually it will. It is also why a used car that has spent its life here inspects differently from the same model that has not, and why the useful question to ask is what the underside looks like rather than only whether the part got replaced.

Two practicalities decide whether a mobile visit is possible at all. Most underground parking garages across the region prohibit repairs and fluid changes outright as a condition of the building rather than a preference, so if the car lives on P2 the honest answer is usually that it has to be driven or towed somewhere. And used oil, oil filters and antifreeze go to a designated return site in Ontario rather than down a drain or into a bin, so a driveway oil change includes somebody taking the old fluid away — an offer silent about that has not priced the whole task. When you post, give the year, make, model and rough mileage, describe what the car does and exactly when it does it (cold, hot, braking, turning, at speed), say whether it is drivable, and say where it is parked and what the building allows.

Questions

Frequently asked

GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

Can a mechanic come to my house?

For a good deal, yes — batteries, wipers, bulbs, filters, a diagnostic scan, a jump, a wheel change, and brakes on some cars. What cannot travel is anything needing the vehicle held high for a long stretch, a press, a torch, or the front of the engine stripped.

Do I need a diagnosis before I can get a price?

Usually, and it is a reasonable thing to book on its own. A noise, a light or a feel can have several causes at very different prices, and a firm number given without looking is a guess. Describe what the car does and when — cold, hot, braking, turning, at speed.

Can I get an Ontario safety certificate at home?

No. A Safety Standards Certificate can only be issued by a licensed Motor Vehicle Inspection Station, by a licensed technician, at that station. Somebody can repair what an inspection failed on wherever the work is possible, but the certificate itself is issued only there.

Why do repairs cost more on an older car here?

Rust from road salt. Brake lines, fuel lines, exhausts and suspension fixings corrode from below over six salted months a year, so fasteners seize and shear, and a task quoted on a part becomes a task on a part plus everything it was attached to.

Can a mobile mechanic work in my condo garage?

Usually not. Most underground garages in the region prohibit repairs and fluid changes as a condition of the building, so the honest answer is that the car has to be driven or towed somewhere. Check with your property manager before you agree a time with anyone.

Is this the same as booking a service for my make?

No. Scheduled servicing follows the intervals in the owner’s manual and is done by make, whether or not anything is wrong — that is our car service category. This page is the fault and the wear: something is happening and it has to be found, then fixed.
