Post this taskWhat handyman actually costs here, and why
Handyman work is defined by what it is not. It is the list of small jobs too varied for a specialist and too fiddly to do yourself: a door that has dropped, a patch where a shelf used to be, a leaking tap washer, a shelf that needs an anchor rated for what is going on it. The useful thing to know before you post is that the price is driven by the number of separate jobs far more than by any one of them, because setup and travel dominate. Five small tasks in one visit cost far less than five visits.
The line with the licensed trades matters here and it is not always intuitive. Anything that alters electrical circuits needs a licensed electrician and ESA notification. Anything that opens a gas line needs a certified fitter. Plumbing inside the wall is a licensed job; replacing a tap or a trap under a sink is not. A good handyman will tell you which side of that line your job falls on and decline the ones that are not theirs — an offer that agrees to everything without asking is a signal, not a convenience.
The GTA-specific constraint is what your walls are made of. Condo demising walls are frequently concrete or block, which means anchors and a hammer drill rather than a stud finder, and it changes both the time and the fixings. The older housing stock across the Danforth, the Junction and East York is plaster and lath, which crumbles when drilled and needs a different patching approach from drywall. Say which you have when you post if you know; if you do not know, say the age of the building and the offers will infer it.
Seasonal work clusters here too. Storm doors, weatherstripping, caulking and small exterior repairs get booked in a rush either side of the first cold snap, and the same is true of the spring list. If your job is weather-dependent, book earlier than feels necessary — the week the temperature drops is the week every handyman in the GTA is fully booked.
Two kinds of job come up here more than the word handyman suggests, and both are worth naming. The first is furniture repair, including office furniture — a chair whose gas lift has gone, a desk that has lost a bracket, cubicle panels after a move. Offices in the GTA replace this sort of thing far more often than they repair it, and a repair is usually a fraction of the cost. The second is fitting rather than plumbing: swapping a tap, fitting a sink, changing a toilet seat. Where the water supply itself is opened, that is a licensed plumber and a good Tasker will say so.
Photographs do more than descriptions in this category. A picture of the dropped door, the crack, the wall you want the shelf on, or the tap that drips tells a Tasker in two seconds what a paragraph struggles to convey, and it is the single biggest determinant of whether the offer you accept is the price you pay. Include something for scale where size matters. If the job has a deadline attached to something else — a viewing, a move-out inspection, guests arriving — say so, because it changes who can realistically take it.

Local knowledge
Priced for how the GTA actually lives
Four things that change a handyman quote here, and nowhere else.
Plaster and lath
Old walls do not take a plug the same way
Much of the older GTA stock is lath and plaster rather than drywall, so anchors, shelves and TV mounts need different fixings and a stud finder that reads through it. A fixing that holds in a 2005 subdivision can pull straight out of a 1920s wall.
Condo rules
What you may drill into is not up to you
GTA condo corporations restrict work on demising and fire-rated walls, and many require notice for anything structural. It is why the same TV mount is a half-hour job in a house and a conversation in a tower.
Winter jobs
Half the list only appears in November
Weather stripping, door sweeps, storm windows and draught proofing are a real GTA category that a milder market barely has, and they are worth doing before the first cold rather than during it.
Basement apartments
A second suite has its own requirements
A large share of GTA homes have a basement unit, and work there touches egress, smoke separation and permitted alterations in ways a spare room does not.
What a handyman visit usually includes
- Labour for the agreed list of jobs
- Standard fixings, anchors and consumables
- Their own tools for general work
- Tidying and taking away offcuts
- Telling you which jobs need a licensed trade instead
Materials like timber, tile or a replacement fitting are usually bought separately.
Try nowWhat moves the price
- How many jobs, and whether they share tools and setup
- Wall construction — plaster and lath is slower than drywall
- Working at height, or anything needing two people
- Condo restrictions and lift bookings
- Whether materials are supplied or bought on the day
- Anything that turns out to need a licensed trade
Worth asking before you accept an offer
- Is this priced hourly or for the whole list?
- Do you supply the fixings and consumables?
- The walls are plaster — do you have the right anchors?
- Is there a minimum call-out?
- Which of these jobs actually needs a licensed trade?
- Can you take the offcuts and packaging away?

Frequently asked
GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.
Is it cheaper to book several jobs at once?
Substantially, because setup and travel dominate small work. Five tasks in one visit cost far less than five visits. Post the whole list rather than the most urgent item.
What can a handyman not legally do?
Alter electrical circuits, open a gas line, or do plumbing inside the wall — those need licensed trades. Replacing a tap or a trap under the sink is ordinary handyman work.
Do they bring materials?
Usually fixings and consumables, rarely the parts. If a specific fixture is going in, say so and agree who is buying it before the day.
Can a handyman install a toilet?
They can fit a toilet seat, swap a tap and change a trap. Setting a new toilet onto the flange and connecting the supply is plumbing, and in Ontario that is licensed work — post it as plumbing instead and the right people see it. A Tasker who agrees to the whole job without asking which part it is has told you something.
Do Taskers repair office and commercial furniture?
Yes, and it is one of the most common things posted in this category — office chairs whose gas lift has failed, desks missing brackets, cubicle panels after a move, and teardown when an office changes floor. Say how many pieces and whether there is loading-dock access; both change the offer more than the repair itself does.
Is handyman work priced hourly or as a flat rate on Taskly?
You receive fixed-price offers for the job you described, not an hourly meter. Use the estimator above for the band before you post, and the cost guide for how the tiers are built. Because setup and travel dominate small work, the cheapest way to buy is one visit with the whole list on it.
