The band is the per-item floor and cap the pricing engine uses for appliance work across the GTA. It covers the common repair and install jobs and excludes the parts themselves, which vary by brand and availability and are quoted by the technician. What appliances actually costs here, and why

Most appliance calls come down to one question the technician answers in the first twenty minutes: is this worth repairing. A control board on a five-year-old front-loader can cost more than half a new machine; a drain pump on the same machine is routine. Ask for the part cost and the labour cost separately before you agree to anything, because the two behave completely differently — labour is predictable and parts are not.

Parts are the GTA-specific problem. Components for the volume brands are stocked locally and land in a day or two. Anything for a European built-in, a panel-ready fridge, or a model discontinued more than about seven years ago tends to be ordered in, and lead times of a week to a month are normal rather than a sign something has gone wrong. If your appliance is integrated into cabinetry, say so when you post: removing a panel-ready dishwasher is a different job from sliding out a freestanding one, and a technician who arrives expecting the second will not have booked the time.

Condo installs carry their own constraints. Many Toronto buildings require a service-lift booking and a certificate of insurance from anyone bringing an appliance through the loading dock, and some restrict delivery hours outright. Stacked laundry in a closet is the most common condo job and the one most often underquoted, because both machines have to come out before anything can be reached. Older houses across East York, the Danforth and Etobicoke have the opposite problem — a laundry pair in a basement with a floor drain and no dedicated circuit, where the electrical is as much of the job as the appliance.

Gas ranges and dryers are a licensed trade in Ontario and not handyman work. If your job involves disconnecting or reconnecting a gas line, the person doing it needs the relevant gas fitter certification, and an offer that treats that casually is the wrong offer. Electric and plumbing-only installs are ordinary work — describe what you have and the offers will tell you which one you are looking at.

Warranty is worth checking before you book anyone. Manufacturer coverage on a major appliance usually runs a year on parts and labour and longer on sealed refrigeration systems, and calling an independent technician can void what is left of it. Extended warranties sold at the till frequently require you to use their network. Find the purchase date first — an out-of-warranty call you could have had free is the most annoying way to spend a service fee. Ask too whether the diagnostic fee is credited against the repair if you go ahead, because most technicians do that and it is rarely volunteered.

Questions

Frequently asked

GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

Is it worth repairing or should I replace it?

The rough test most technicians use is whether the repair costs more than half the price of an equivalent new unit, adjusted for the age of the machine. Ask for part and labour separately — that split tells you more than a single total.

Why is the part taking weeks?

Volume-brand parts are stocked locally. Anything for a European built-in, a panel-ready unit, or a model discontinued years ago is usually ordered in, and a week to a month is normal. Worth asking about availability before committing to the repair.

Can anyone install a gas dryer or range?

No. Gas work in Ontario needs the relevant certification. Electric and plumbing-only installs are ordinary work. Say which you have when you post so the right people quote.
