Post this taskWhat carpentry actually costs here, and why
The question worth answering before hiring a carpenter is when custom is actually the right call, because a lot of the time it is not. Flat-pack has got good, and a standard-width bookcase against a straight wall is cheaper and perfectly fine bought. Custom earns its cost in three situations: when the space is not standard — an alcove, a sloped ceiling, a wall that is out of square, which describes most older GTA houses; when the piece has to work around something, like a radiator, a bulkhead or a staircase; and when it has to match something already there. Outside those, buying is usually the better answer, and a carpenter worth hiring will tell you so.
Refinishing is the most undervalued thing in this category. Kitchen cabinet doors that are structurally fine but dated can be sanded, filled and resprayed for a fraction of a replacement, and the result is limited by the preparation rather than the paint. That is the whole job: degreasing, sanding to a key, filling, priming correctly for the substrate, and enough drying time between coats. A quote that sounds fast is usually skipping the part that decides how long it lasts, and a carpenter who talks about preparation before colour is the one to book.
Wood rot is a GTA-specific line of work worth knowing about, because the freeze-thaw cycle here is what causes it. Water gets into an exterior sill, a door frame, a deck post or a window surround, freezes, expands the fibre, and does it again forty times a winter. Caught early it is a cut-out-and-splice repair. Left, it reaches the structure behind and becomes a different job entirely. The tell is paint that looks intact but gives when pressed — if a screwdriver goes into the wood, it is past patching.
Material choice is the other decision worth making deliberately rather than by default. Painted work can be built from a stable engineered board and will stay flat; anything stained or oiled shows the grain, so it has to be solid timber and the species changes both the cost and the colour. Test a stain on an offcut before committing, because the same tin reads completely differently on pine, oak and poplar, and nobody can predict it from a chart.
What produces an accurate carpentry quote is a measurement and a photograph, not a description. Give the opening width, height and depth, say whether the wall is plaster, drywall or masonry, name the finish you want — painted, stained, or a specific wood — and say whether the piece needs to be scribed to an uneven wall, which is what most older houses require. With those five things a carpenter can price without a site visit; without them, every offer you get is a range.

Local knowledge
Priced for how the GTA actually lives
Four things that change a carpentry quote here, and nowhere else.
When custom is right
Three cases where built beats bought, and one where it does not
A space that is not standard, a piece that must work around a radiator or a bulkhead, or something that has to match what is already there. Against a straight wall at a standard width, flat-pack is cheaper and fine — and a carpenter worth hiring says so.
Walls out of square
Older GTA houses are why scribing exists
Century semis and pre-war houses settle, and almost nothing in them is plumb or square. A built-in has to be scribed to the actual wall rather than assembled to a drawing, which is skilled time and the main reason a custom piece costs what it does.
Preparation, not paint
Refinishing lives or dies on what happens before the colour
Degrease, sand to a key, fill, prime for the substrate, and allow real drying time between coats. A quote that sounds fast is skipping the part that decides how long it lasts — which is why the carpenter who talks about preparation first is the one to book.
Freeze-thaw rot
Forty freezes a winter is what destroys exterior wood here
Water enters a sill, a post or a door frame, freezes, expands the fibre, and repeats all season. Caught early it is a cut-and-splice repair. The tell is paint that looks intact but gives under pressure — if a screwdriver sinks in, it is past patching.
What makes a carpentry quote accurate
- The opening width, height and depth, measured
- A photograph of the space, including what is around it
- Whether the wall is plaster, drywall or masonry
- The finish: painted, stained, or a named wood
- Whether the piece must be scribed to an uneven wall
With those five, most carpenters can quote without a site visit. Without them, every offer is a range.

Questions
Frequently asked
GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.
Is custom shelving worth it over flat-pack?
In three cases: a space that is not a standard size, a piece that has to work around a radiator or bulkhead, or something that must match existing joinery. That covers most older GTA houses. Against a straight wall at a standard width, buying is cheaper and perfectly good.
Can kitchen cabinets be refinished instead of replaced?
If the carcasses and doors are structurally sound, yes, and for a fraction of a replacement. The result depends almost entirely on preparation — degreasing, sanding to a key, filling and the right primer for the substrate. Ask about that process before asking about colour.
How do I know if wood rot is repairable?
Press it. Paint can look intact over wood that has gone soft underneath, and if a screwdriver sinks in, it is past patching. Repairable rot is cut out and spliced with sound timber. Rot that has reached a structural element behind is a larger job and worth establishing early.
What information does a carpenter need to quote?
A measurement and a photograph. Width, height and depth of the opening, what the wall is made of, the finish you want, and whether the piece needs scribing to an uneven wall. With those, most carpenters can give a fixed price without visiting.
Why does a built-in cost more than it looks like it should?
Because almost nothing in an older house is square, and the piece has to be scribed to the wall that exists rather than assembled to a drawing. That fitting time is skilled, it happens on site, and it is the difference between a built-in that looks built-in and one that has gaps.
