Post this taskWhat gardening actually costs here, and why
Gardening and landscaping get used interchangeably and they buy different things. Gardening is the living part: planting, beds, borders, pruning, mulching, edging, clearing and the seasonal work that keeps it all going. Landscaping is the built part — hardscape, grading, retaining, patios, structures — and lawn care is its own separate thing again, with mowing, aeration and feeding on a schedule. All three exist on Taskly as distinct categories. Knowing which word you want is the difference between offers that match your job and offers that price something else.
The season here is short and it has a shape, which is why gardening in the GTA is bought as a handful of distinct visits rather than as a steady trickle. Spring cleanup comes as soon as the ground dries: winter debris off the beds, cutting back what was left standing, an edge put in and the first weeding. Planting waits for the frost to be genuinely finished, which here means the second half of May for anything tender. Autumn is the big one: cutting back, leaf work, dividing perennials while the soil is still warm, planting bulbs, and getting mulch down before the ground freezes.
Pruning is where an amateur and a gardener visibly differ, and the reason is timing rather than technique. Shrubs that flower in spring — lilac, forsythia, many hydrangeas — set next year’s buds on old wood shortly after they finish flowering. Cut them in the autumn tidy-up and you get a healthy plant with no flowers, and nobody finds out until the following June. Summer-flowering shrubs are the opposite and want cutting while dormant. Anything needing a chainsaw at height, or work on a protected tree, is a different job with its own permit questions in several GTA municipalities.
Weeds work differently here than they do in most of the copy you will read online, because Ontario restricts cosmetic pesticide use on lawns and gardens. In practice that means the honest tools are physical and cultural: hand weeding while the weeds are small, a proper edge so grass stops creeping into beds, mulch thick enough to keep light off the soil, and dense planting so there is no bare ground left to colonise. Anyone offering to spray your beds with something strong should be able to name the product and say why it is allowed, because most of what people picture is not.
Two practical things to put in the post, because they decide the price more than the plant list does. First, access: can a wheelbarrow get to the back garden, or does everything come through the house or down a mutual drive? That one fact turns a mulch delivery from an hour into an afternoon. Second, green waste: most GTA municipalities collect yard waste seasonally on set weeks, so the answer is often to bag and time it to collection rather than pay for a haul.

Local knowledge
Priced for how the GTA actually lives
Four things that change a gardening quote here, and nowhere else.
The frost line
Tender planting waits until the second half of May here
A warm April week in the GTA is not the end of frost, and anything tender put out early is bought twice. Hardy shrubs, bulbs and dividing perennials work on a different calendar, which is why the planting question is always "what", not just "when".
Ontario rules
Cosmetic pesticide use on lawns and gardens is restricted here
The tools that actually work under Ontario rules are physical: hand weeding while weeds are small, a real edge, thick mulch, and dense planting that leaves no bare soil. Anyone offering to spray your beds with something strong should be able to name the product and say why it is allowed, because most of what people picture is not.
Yard waste weeks
Most GTA municipalities collect green waste on set weeks
That makes hauling optional a lot of the time — bagged and bundled to the curb on the right week costs nothing but timing. Worth deciding in the post, because "take it all away" and "leave it bagged for collection" are two different quotes.
Rear access
Whether a wheelbarrow reaches the back garden sets the price
Older Toronto semis and rowhouses often have no side gate, only a mutual drive or a route through the house. Carrying soil and mulch by the bucket turns an hour into an afternoon, and it is the single fact most often missing from a gardening post.
What to put in the post
- Roughly how many metres of bed, border or hedge
- Whether a wheelbarrow can reach the back garden
- Whether green waste is hauled away or bagged for collection
- Sun or shade, and whether the soil is heavy clay
- Whether you want a one-off visit or a seasonal arrangement

Questions
Frequently asked
GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.
What is the difference between gardening and landscaping?
Gardening is the living part — planting, beds, pruning, mulching, edging and seasonal care. Landscaping is the built part: hardscape, grading, retaining and structures. Lawn care is separate again. They are different categories here, and asking for the right one gets you comparable offers.
When can I plant in the GTA?
Anything tender waits until frost is genuinely finished, which locally means the second half of May. Hardy shrubs, trees and perennials go in earlier in spring or in autumn, when warm soil and cooler air let roots establish without the plant trying to hold up leaves at the same time.
When should shrubs be pruned?
It depends what they do. Spring-flowering shrubs like lilac and forsythia set next year’s buds shortly after flowering, so pruning them in autumn removes the flowers before anyone sees them. Summer-flowering shrubs are cut while dormant. Say what you have and a gardener will time it.
What can be used on weeds in Ontario?
Ontario restricts cosmetic pesticide use on lawns and gardens, so the effective approach here is physical: hand weeding while weeds are small, a clean edge, thick mulch, and planting densely enough that no bare soil is left. Mulch does more across a season than any one visit.
Do I need to pay for the green waste to be taken away?
Often not. Most GTA municipalities collect yard waste seasonally on set weeks, so bagged and bundled at the curb costs only timing. Hauling makes sense for a big clearance, out-of-season work, or anything the collection rules exclude. Decide which you want in the post.
