What pest control actually costs here, and why

Toronto has a genuinely unusual pest profile for a North American city, and raccoons are the reason. The urban population here is among the densest anywhere, they are strong enough to open a soffit and intelligent enough to remember it, and Ontario’s wildlife rules protect them in ways that surprise people: an animal you live-trap has to be released within a kilometre of where it was caught, so a raccoon cannot simply be driven somewhere else, and no humane operator will shut a female out in the spring until her kits can leave with her. Anyone promising to make a raccoon problem disappear in April is either breaking the rules or not telling you the whole plan.

That is why the honest frame for most of this category is exclusion rather than extermination. Killing what is inside does nothing about the hole it came through, and in a semi-detached or row house — which is much of the older city — the hole is often shared with a neighbour whose habits you do not control. A proper job finds the entry points, seals them in the right order so nothing is trapped inside a wall, and only then deals with what remains. A quote that skips straight to treatment is quoting the visible half.

Mice arrive with the first cold and are almost entirely a sealing problem: a gap the width of a pencil is enough, and the usual routes are around service penetrations, under siding and through the gaps that older foundations settle into. Wasps are a summer job with a real safety line — a nest in a soffit or wall cavity is not a homeowner job, and the number of people who fall off a ladder trying is not small. Bed bugs are their own category entirely, need heat or a professional chemical programme rather than anything sold retail, and are the one pest where DIY attempts reliably make the professional job harder and more expensive.

Tenants in Ontario should know where they stand, because this is a legal question rather than a courtesy one. Under the Residential Tenancies Act a landlord is responsible for maintaining a rental in a good state of repair and fit for habitation, and pest infestation falls under that obligation — it is not something a tenant is expected to solve privately. Requests are worth putting in writing, and the Landlord and Tenant Board is the route if they are not acted on.

Licensing matters here too. Applying pesticides commercially in Ontario requires a licensed exterminator, and Ontario’s Pesticides Act and its cosmetic-use rules restrict what may be applied and where. Wildlife work has its own rules. What a Tasker does genuinely and well is the prevention half: sealing gaps, fitting mesh over vents and soffit gaps, cutting back the branches that give roof access, tidying the yard clutter that houses things, and securing bins — the work that decides whether the exterminator has to come back next year.

Questions

Frequently asked

GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

Can I just have the raccoon removed?

Not simply, and not at any time of year. Toronto restricts trapping and relocation, and a mother with kits in spring cannot be excluded until the young can leave with her. The lawful and effective approach is finding the entry, closing it in the right order, and preventing the return.

Why do the mice keep coming back?

Because the hole is still there. Killing what is inside does nothing about the route in, and in a semi or row house that route is often on the neighbour’s half of the roofline — which is why sealing your side alone can fail.

I rent. Who pays?

In Ontario the landlord is responsible for keeping the unit in a good state of repair and fit to live in, and pest infestation falls inside that duty. Put the request in writing; the Landlord and Tenant Board is the route if it is not acted on.

Can a Tasker spray for bugs?

No. Commercial pesticide application in Ontario requires a licensed exterminator and the Cosmetic Pesticides Ban Act restricts what may be used. Sealing, screening, cutting back and clearing are unlicensed, genuinely Tasker work, and are what stops a repeat.

Are bed bugs different?

Completely. They need heat treatment or a professional chemical programme, and retail products routinely make the professional job harder and dearer. It is the one pest where a DIY attempt reliably costs more than doing nothing.
