What Ajax is getting done

Real open tasks from members in Ajax, each with a budget attached. Post yours in a minute — local Taskers send fixed-price offers, and your money stays with Taskly until it's done.

Ajax began as a wartime factory town. The south end was laid out in the 1940s around a munitions plant, so the streets there are short, the houses small and the lots tight; north of the 401 almost everything is newer than 2000. Its entire lakefront is public parkland, which is unusual on this shore.

What Ajax is made of

The street names are a ship’s crew

Ajax is named after HMS Ajax, and the streets in the older part of town are named after her crew and the ships that fought beside her. The practical half is that those streets were laid out for wartime housing on a tight grid that does not continue north of Kingston Road, so an address in south Ajax rarely sits where the newer grid would put it.

Small houses carrying seventy years of alterations

South Ajax is a long run of 1940s and 1950s wartime housing: one storey, small footprint, and now decades of alterations layered on top. Work in those houses is retrofit work — undersized services, low basements, additions built onto additions — and it is nothing like the post-2000 stock five minutes north of the highway.

Everything is close to everything

Ajax is by far the smallest of the Durham lakeshore towns by area. Pickering and Whitby are each more than twice its size and both run far north of the 401 into land that is still fields, while Ajax is compact and built out. Two bookings on the same day here are usually ten minutes apart, which is not something either neighbour can offer.

Tasks come from Pickering Village, South Ajax, Central Ajax, Audley, Nottingham and Lakeside.
