A fence is priced per linear foot and decided by what is under it. The posts are the job: in the GTA they have to go below the frost line or the fence will lift and rack within a couple of winters, and that means holes deeper than most people expect. Ground full of fill, clay, tree roots or old buried concrete turns a straightforward dig into an afternoon per post, which is why two quotes for the same run of fence can be so far apart.
Height and placement are governed by municipal bylaw, and it is not uniform across the region. Most GTA municipalities limit how tall a fence can be in a front yard and allow more at the rear, with pool enclosures governed separately and more strictly. Corner lots have sightline rules that override the general limit. None of this is complicated, but it does mean a fence that is legal in one municipality can be too tall two streets over — check your own before you buy materials, because the enforcement is complaint-driven and arrives after the fence is up.
A fence on a shared boundary is a conversation before it is a job. Where a fence sits on the property line between two houses, Ontario's line-fences framework treats it as a shared responsibility, and in practice the smoothest version is agreeing the fence, the cost split and the line with your neighbour before anything is ordered. The version that goes wrong is a fence built on assumption and a survey pin found afterwards. If there is any doubt about where the line runs, that is worth resolving first — it is far cheaper than moving a finished fence.
Material sets the maintenance more than the price. Pressure-treated wood is the default here, costs least up front and wants staining every few years to survive the freeze-thaw. Cedar costs more and weathers better. Chain link is the cheapest durable option and the honest choice for a back boundary or a dog run. PVC and aluminum cost most and ask for nothing afterwards, which over fifteen years is often the cheaper answer. Iron is its own category and usually a front-yard decision rather than a boundary one.
Season matters more than for most trades. Post holes cannot be dug into frozen ground without equipment that costs more, so GTA fencing effectively runs from the spring thaw to the first hard freeze, and the whole region books that window at once. Spring is the busiest and most expensive part of it; late summer and early autumn are easier to schedule and the ground is at its most workable. A fence posted for in February is a fence quoted for April.

How much does a fence cost in Toronto?

How tall can my fence be?
It depends on your municipality and which yard it is in. When is the best time to have a fence built?
Between the spring thaw and the first hard freeze, and preferably not in the spring rush. Post holes cannot be dug into frozen ground without more expensive equipment, so the whole region competes for the same window. Late summer and early autumn schedule more easily and the ground digs best.
Wood or vinyl?
Pressure-treated wood costs least up front and wants staining every few years to survive the freeze-thaw. Cedar costs more and weathers better. PVC and aluminum cost most and ask nothing of you afterwards, which across fifteen years often works out cheaper. Chain link remains the honest answer for a back boundary or a dog run.
