Frost depth
The posts are the job
GTA posts have to sit below the frost line or the fence lifts and racks within a couple of winters. Clay, fill, roots and buried concrete turn that dig into an afternoon per post, and that is where two quotes diverge.
Bylaws
Legal height is not the same across the region
Front-yard and rear-yard limits differ by municipality, corner lots carry sightline rules, and pool enclosures are governed separately and more strictly. Enforcement is complaint-driven and arrives after the fence is up.

A shared fence is a conversation first
Ontario treats a fence on the boundary as shared. Agreeing the line, the fence and the split with the neighbour before ordering is far cheaper than finding a survey pin afterwards.

How much does a fence cost in Toronto?
We publish no band for fencing, deliberately. Our pricing engine has rows for cleaning, moving, junk removal, lawn care, plumbing and electrical work, and fencing is not among them — a typed range would be a number derived from nothing. Post the run you want and compare the fixed-price offers.
How tall can my fence be?
It depends on your municipality and which yard it is in. Most GTA municipalities allow more height at the rear than the front, corner lots have sightline rules on top, and pool enclosures are governed separately and more strictly. Check your own bylaw before buying materials — enforcement is complaint-driven and arrives after it is built.
Who pays for a fence on the property line?
Ontario's line-fences framework treats a boundary fence as a shared responsibility, and in practice the version that goes smoothly is agreeing the fence, the line and the cost split with your neighbour before anything is ordered. If either of you is unsure where the line actually runs, resolve that first — it costs far less than moving a finished fence.
Why do posts have to go so deep?
Because of frost. Ground that freezes and thaws will push a shallow post upward over a winter or two, and once one post lifts the whole run racks. Setting below the frost line is what makes the difference between a fence that is straight in five years and one that is not — and it is the single biggest labour cost in the job.
When is the best time to have a fence built?
Between the spring thaw and the first hard freeze, and preferably not in the spring rush. Post holes cannot be dug into frozen ground without more expensive equipment, so the whole region competes for the same window. Late summer and early autumn schedule more easily and the ground digs best.
Wood or vinyl?
Pressure-treated wood costs least up front and wants staining every few years to survive the freeze-thaw. Cedar costs more and weathers better. PVC and aluminum cost most and ask nothing of you afterwards, which across fifteen years often works out cheaper. Chain link remains the honest answer for a back boundary or a dog run.
