The band is the floor and ceiling the engine prices electrical jobs against across the GTA. It covers labour on common residential work; permits, inspections and any utility charge on a panel upgrade sit outside it and are quoted separately. Generated from the price table.

What electricians actually costs here, and why

Electrical work in Ontario is a licensed trade, and that is not a formality. Electrical Safety Authority notification is required for most work beyond a like-for-like fixture swap, and the inspection that follows is what your insurer and any future buyer will look for. When quotes differ by a lot, the cheap one is often the one that has left the permit out. Ask whether ESA notification is included and who is filing it.

The GTA has a problem most of the country does not: knob-and-tube wiring, still present in a meaningful share of pre-1950 housing across the older parts of Toronto. It is not automatically dangerous, but many insurers will not write a policy on a home that still has it, which turns an electrical job into a closing condition. If your house is that vintage and the wiring has never been assessed, the assessment is the job to book first — replacing outlets on a knob-and-tube circuit does not make it a modern circuit.

Panel upgrades are the other common large job. A hundred-amp panel that was ample in 1975 is tight for a household with a heat pump, an EV charger and an induction range, and the upgrade usually involves the utility as well as the electrician, which is why lead times run longer than people expect. EV charger installs depend almost entirely on where the panel sits relative to where you park: a charger on the other side of a garage wall is straightforward, one across a driveway is a trenching job.

Smaller work is ordinary and quick. Pot lights, dimmers, additional outlets, fixture swaps, exterior receptacles and smoke-alarm interconnection are the bread-and-butter jobs, and the fair way to price them is by counting devices and judging the ceiling above them. Plaster and lath — which is most of the older Toronto stock — is materially more work than drywall for anything cut into a ceiling, and an offer that has not asked about it may be pricing a different house.

Getting comparable quotes takes one piece of discipline: describe the same scope to everyone. Count the devices, say what the ceiling is made of, state whether you want the old fittings removed and taken away, and mention any access constraint like a finished basement below. Electricians price scope, not descriptions, so three quotes against three different mental pictures are not three quotes. Ask each one what they would find if they opened the wall — the answers tell you who has worked on houses your age.

Questions

Frequently asked

GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

Do I need a permit?

Most electrical work beyond a like-for-like fixture swap needs ESA notification in Ontario. Ask whether it is included and who is filing it — a quote that omits it is not comparable to one that includes it.

My house has knob-and-tube. Is that urgent?

It is not automatically unsafe, but many insurers will not cover a home that still has it, so it often becomes urgent for a reason unrelated to safety. An assessment is the first job, not a rewire.

Why do EV charger quotes vary so much?

Because they are mostly about distance and route from your panel to where you park. A charger on the other side of a garage wall is an afternoon; one across a driveway is a trenching job.
