What tutoring actually costs here, and why

The most useful thing to know about tutoring here is that the Ontario curriculum, not the subject name, is what a tutor needs to be fluent in. Grade 9 maths was de-streamed, the Grade 10 literacy requirement can be met through the OSSLT or the course, and Grade 12 courses carry university and college streams that determine what a student can apply to. A tutor who knows the curriculum can tell you whether your child is behind or simply in a hard unit; one who only knows the subject often cannot.

The year has a shape. September and October are quiet and are the best time to start, because the work is establishing rather than remediating. Demand climbs into the first report cards, peaks around midterms and again in the spring, and EQAO testing in Grade 3, 6 and 9 pulls a wave of short-notice bookings. If you already know a subject is going to be difficult, booking in the autumn buys you a better choice of tutor at a better rate than booking in February does.

In-person and online are genuinely different products in the GTA rather than a preference. Online removes travel, which matters when a tutor good at one specific thing lives in Mississauga and you are in Scarborough, and it works well for most subjects at most ages. It works less well for younger children, for anything requiring physical manipulatives, and for students who need the accountability of a person in the room. Travel time also shows up in price for in-person work — a tutor crossing the city twice a week is pricing that in whether or not it appears on the invoice.

For newcomer families there is an additional layer worth naming: a student who is strong in a subject and still learning English will look like a student who is weak in the subject, and the tutoring that helps is often subject-specific English rather than more of the subject. Say so when you post if it applies. It changes who should be answering, and the tutors who do this well will identify themselves quickly.

Agree what progress looks like in the first session, not the fifth. A tutor who cannot tell you what they are working toward is difficult to evaluate later, and "more confident" is not a measure. A specific unit, a specific assignment, a target on a specific assessment, or simply getting homework finished without a fight are all legitimate goals and all checkable. Sessions also work better at a consistent time than at whatever slot is free each week, because the preparation between them is where much of the value sits.

Questions

Frequently asked

GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

When should we start?

September or October if you have a choice. The work is establishing rather than remediating, and you get a better choice of tutor than you will in the February rush.

Online or in person?

Online works well for most subjects and most ages, and it lets you book the right tutor rather than the near one. In person is better for younger children and for students who need someone in the room.

My child is strong at maths but new to English. What do we book?

Often subject-specific English rather than more maths. Say so when you post — it changes who should be answering.
