What paving actually costs here, and why

A driveway is a base with a surface on top, and almost every failure people blame on the surface is actually the base. Toronto ground freezes and thaws repeatedly through a winter, and each cycle lifts and drops whatever sits on it. A properly built driveway has enough compacted granular underneath to drain and to move as one piece; a badly built one has a thin layer of stone, a smooth new surface, and cracks within three years. The base is invisible the day the job finishes, which is exactly why it is the thing to ask about.

The three surfaces behave differently here. Asphalt is the cheapest and the most forgiving of movement — it flexes rather than cracking, and it is resealable, though it wants a few years before the first seal rather than immediately. Interlock costs more, can be lifted and relaid where it settles, and handles freeze-thaw well because it is designed to move; it also needs a proper edge restraint or it spreads outward over time. Poured concrete is the most rigid and the least tolerant: it must be jointed correctly to control where it cracks, and in this climate it will crack somewhere.

Drainage decides how long any of it lasts. Water that sits on or under a driveway freezes, expands and does the damage; water that runs off does not. That means the grade has to fall away from the garage and the house, and it means paying attention to where the downspouts discharge, because a downspout emptying onto the driveway apron in November is a sheet of ice in December and a heaved slab by March. This is the single most commonly ignored part of a driveway quote.

Removal is a real cost and it is often left out. Taking up an old asphalt driveway, an old interlock bed or a concrete slab is a disposal job with weight-based tipping fees, and it is usually a separate line rather than assumed. So is the depth of excavation: a driveway that needs eight inches of granular under it needs eight inches dug out first, and if the existing base is contaminated with clay or old fill it has to come out rather than be built on. Ask what depth is being excavated and what is going back in.

The season is short and everyone wants it. Asphalt needs warm ground to compact properly, concrete needs temperatures that let it cure, and interlock is the most tolerant but still wants unfrozen ground for the base. That puts the GTA window from roughly May to October, with the good crews booked well into it. If you are planning a driveway for next year, the quotes are better and the schedule is real if you ask in the autumn rather than in the spring rush.

Questions

Frequently asked

GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

How much does a driveway cost in Toronto?

No band on this page, deliberately. Our engine has rate rows for cleaning, moving, junk removal, lawn care, plumbing and electrical work, and paving is not one of them, so rather than type a range nobody can derive we show none. Post the driveway and compare the fixed-price offers you actually receive.

Asphalt, interlock or concrete?

Asphalt is cheapest and flexes with the freeze-thaw rather than cracking. Interlock costs more, handles movement well because it is designed to move, and individual settled areas can be lifted and relaid. Concrete is the most rigid and the least forgiving in this climate — it will crack, so the question is whether the control joints decide where.

Why did my driveway crack after two winters?

Almost always the base rather than the surface. Toronto ground freezes and thaws repeatedly, and a thin or poorly compacted granular layer moves unevenly under whatever is on top. Water is the other half — if it sits on or under the surface it freezes and expands. Both are decided before the surface goes down.

Do I need to remove the old driveway?

Usually yes if the base is the problem, which it often is. Paving over a failing base buys a smooth surface and the same failure a bit later. Removal carries real weight-based disposal fees and is normally a separate line, so confirm whether it is inside the quote before comparing two numbers.

When can paving be done?

Roughly May to October in the GTA. Asphalt needs warm ground to compact properly, concrete needs temperatures that allow it to cure, and every surface needs an unfrozen base. It is a short season the whole region competes for — asking in the autumn for the following year usually gets a better price and a real date.
