Post this taskWhat delivery and pickup actually costs here, and why
This is item delivery done by a person with a vehicle: collecting something you have bought, moving one large thing across town, running to a store on your behalf. It is not a freight company and this page does not pretend otherwise. Nobody here operates a licensed trucking service, nothing is going into a warehouse overnight, and there is no depot. What that buys you instead is directness — one person, one vehicle, your item, today, with a name attached — which for a single sofa or a store pickup is usually the thing you actually wanted.
The question that decides everything is vehicle and hands. A sedan takes boxes, a television up to a certain size, groceries and most flat-pack cartons if the seats fold. A hatchback takes a bicycle, a bagged mattress or a disassembled bed. A van or a pickup is what a sofa, a fridge, a wardrobe or a full flat-pack kitchen needs. Separately from size there is weight and shape: a solid-wood dresser, an appliance or a sleeper sofa is a two-person lift whatever it is going into. Say the dimensions, and say whether stairs are involved at both ends.
Store collections have their own rules and they are worth knowing before the day. Big-box lots across the GTA want an order number and identification that matches the order, will only release goods within their own hours, and often have a separate collection bay a long way from the entrance. Some stores will not release to a third party at all without you adding that person to the order in advance. Five minutes arranging that turns a wasted trip into a straightforward one, and it is the single most common reason a store pickup goes wrong here.
At the delivery end, the building is what slows things down in this region. A downtown or Mississauga condo will usually want the service elevator booked for anything large, will have shorter loading-dock hours than you expect, and may want the person at the door registered at the desk. Older Toronto semis come with narrow stairs, tight landings and doorways a modern sofa does not fit through in one piece. The fix is the same either way: measure the doorway and the turn, and say so in the post.
Two GTA costs are worth naming so nobody is surprised. The 407 is a toll route, and a cross-region run that uses it costs more than the same distance on the 401 — agree in the chat whether it is being used and who pays. And parking near a downtown drop-off is genuinely difficult, with permit-only streets and short loading windows, so a delivery into the core is a different job from the same distance into a Scarborough driveway.

Local knowledge
Priced for how the GTA actually lives
Four things that change a delivery and pickup quote here, and nowhere else.
407 tolls
A cross-region run costs differently depending on the route
The 407 is a toll road and the 401 is not, so the same distance across the GTA has two prices. Agree in the chat before the day whether the toll route is being used and who is paying for it — it is a five-second conversation and an awkward one afterwards.
Condo access
The service elevator is booked, not requested on arrival
Most downtown and Mississauga towers require a booked lift window for anything large, keep loading-dock hours shorter than people expect, and register visitors at the desk. A van at the ramp with no booking is a wasted trip somebody still has to be paid for.
Store collections
GTA big-box lots will not release goods to just anyone
An order number and matching identification are normal, a separate collection bay is common, and some stores need the collecting person added to the order in advance. Arranging that beforehand is the difference between a pickup and a round trip for nothing.
Old doorways
A modern sofa does not fit a Victorian staircase
Narrow stairs, tight landings and doorways sized for smaller furniture are standard across older Toronto housing. Measure the doorway and the turn at the top of the stairs before booking, because the alternative is discovering it with the sofa halfway up.
What to put in the post
- What the item is, roughly how big, and roughly how heavy
- Whether it is a one-person carry or genuinely needs two
- Stairs, lifts and doorway width at both ends
- Any store order number, and whose name the order is in
- Whether the toll route is expected, and who is paying for it

Questions
Frequently asked
GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.
What size vehicle do I need for my delivery?
A car takes boxes, a television and most flat-pack cartons with the seats down. A hatchback takes a bicycle or a bagged mattress. A sofa, fridge, wardrobe or full kitchen order needs a van or a pickup. When you are unsure, give the dimensions in the post and the offers will tell you.
Can one person deliver a sofa?
Rarely, and it is worth being honest about in advance. Solid furniture, appliances and anything with a sleeper mechanism are two-person lifts regardless of the vehicle, and stairs settle the question entirely. A job posted for one person that needs two stops on the landing, which helps nobody.
Can someone collect an order from a store for me?
Usually, with preparation. Most GTA big-box stores want the order number and identification matching the order, and several will only release to a person named on it — so add them in advance. Check the collection hours too, as the bay often closes earlier than the store.
Who pays the 407 toll?
Whoever you agree pays it, which is why it belongs in the chat rather than in a surprise afterwards. A cross-region run on the toll route is faster and costs more than the same trip on the 401. Say in the post whether you want the quicker route or the cheaper one.
Is this the same as hiring movers?
No. This is item delivery — one thing, or a few, in a vehicle, usually same day. A household move is a different job with different equipment, protection and time, and it is worth posting as one. If it is more than a vehicle takes but less than a house, a truck with two people is the middle option.
