Post this taskWhat furniture and upholstery repair actually costs here, and why
Most of what people mean by furniture repair is seating, and most of what people mean by upholstery repair is one of four things: a split seam, a worn or torn arm or panel, a seat that has gone soft and low, or webbing and springs that have let go underneath. All four are repairs to a piece that is fundamentally fine, and all four are cheaper and quicker than recovering the whole thing. Recovering — new fabric over the existing frame — is the bigger purchase, and it is worth doing only when the frame is worth keeping, which in practice means solid hardwood joinery rather than staples and engineered board.
Upholstery repair is not upholstery cleaning, and the two get posted interchangeably. If the fabric is intact and the problem is a stain, a smell or general grime, that is a cleaning task and it lives in our cleaning category, priced per piece with drying time as the thing people underestimate. If the fabric is torn, thin, split at a seam, or the seat has collapsed, that is this page. Saying which one you have in your first sentence is what turns a mixed bag of offers into comparable ones.
The wooden half of this category has a mechanism that is specifically local, and it explains the January phone call. GTA homes run a very wide indoor humidity swing: humid through the summer, then months of heated dry air that pulls moisture out of solid wood. Chair rails, stretchers, table aprons and drawer runners shrink against their glue lines, and the joint that was firm in September is loose by February. That is why so many dining chairs wobble in winter. It is also why re-gluing is done properly in the dry season and with the joint fully taken apart and cleaned — a bead of glue squeezed into a moving joint fails again within a year.
Flat-pack furniture is the honest exception and it is worth saying plainly. A particleboard carcass with a stripped cam lock or a blown-out screw boss cannot be re-glued the way solid wood can, because there is nothing structural to glue. What is genuinely possible is a bracket, a dowel repair, a replacement panel from the maker, or a corner block that takes the load somewhere else. Sometimes that is the right answer for a piece that fits a particular space; often it is not. A Tasker who tells you a piece is not worth repairing is doing the useful part of the work.
Where the repair happens decides most of the cost, and in this region that is a logistics question rather than a craft one. On-site work — re-gluing, hardware, a mechanism, a small seam — happens in your home in one visit. Recovering and frame rebuilds are workshop work: the piece leaves, and it comes back. In a condo that means two booked service-elevator windows, often weeks apart, on top of the transport. In an older Toronto house it can mean something harder, because a sofa that came up on its side, in pieces, or through a bay window may not be able to leave whole at all. Send photographs of the piece and of the route out, and ask which of the two the quote assumes.

Local knowledge
Priced for how the GTA actually lives
Four things that change a furniture and upholstery repair quote here, and nowhere else.
The heating season
Chairs come loose here every winter, and it is the air
GTA homes swing from a humid summer to months of dry heated air, and solid wood shrinks away from its glue lines. A dining chair firm in September is wobbling by February. Re-glue in the dry season, with the joint fully apart, or the same joint reopens next year.
Two lift windows
A workshop repair is two elevator bookings, not one
Recovering and frame rebuilds mean the piece leaves and returns, and in a GTA tower each direction needs its own booked service-elevator window, often weeks apart. That is why an on-site repair here is worth more than the difference in labour suggests.
The way it came in
In an older Toronto house, the staircase decides the method
A sofa that came up on its side, in sections, or through a bay window in a narrow semi may not be able to leave whole. Whether a workshop repair is even available is settled by the turn at the top of the stairs before anyone looks at the fabric.
Built for one wall
Small GTA units make an odd-sized piece worth keeping
Furniture bought to fit one specific wall of a compact condo is not simply replaced — the replacement has to fit the same wall, and often nothing standard does. That is the case for repairing a piece here that a larger home would have put on the curb.
What a repair visit usually covers
- Looking at the piece properly before quoting the method
- Small fabric and seam work done in place
- Joints taken apart, cleaned of old glue, re-glued and clamped
- Hardware, brackets, glides and mechanism parts fitted
- A plain answer on whether the piece is worth the work
Recovering, foam replacement in quantity and frame rebuilds are workshop work, quoted with transport both ways.
Try nowWhat to settle before you accept an offer
- Is this quoted as on-site work, or does the piece leave?
- If it leaves, who moves it, and is the return trip in the price?
- Is the frame solid wood, or engineered board and staples?
- Who supplies the fabric, and how much yardage does it need?
- How long will the piece be away, end to end?
If the fabric is intact and the problem is a stain or a smell, that is upholstery cleaning rather than repair.

Questions
Frequently asked
GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.
Is upholstery repair the same as upholstery cleaning?
No, and they are separate categories here. Cleaning deals with stains, smells and grime in fabric that is otherwise sound. Repair deals with torn or split fabric, worn arms, collapsed seats and failed webbing. Say which one you have in your first sentence and the offers come back comparable.
Is it worth repairing my sofa or should I replace it?
Look at the frame rather than the fabric. Solid hardwood joinery is worth recovering and will outlast a new mid-range sofa; a frame of engineered board and staples usually is not. In a small GTA unit an odd-sized piece that fits one wall is also worth more than its resale value suggests.
Why do my dining chairs keep going wobbly?
Almost always the heating season. Dry indoor air through a GTA winter pulls moisture out of solid wood, the parts shrink against their glue lines, and the joint loosens. The lasting fix is taking the joint fully apart, cleaning the old glue off and re-gluing — not squeezing glue into a moving joint.
Can flat-pack furniture be repaired?
Sometimes, and not the way solid wood can. A stripped cam lock or a blown screw boss in particleboard has nothing structural to glue back to, so the honest options are a bracket, a dowel repair, a corner block, or a replacement panel from the maker. Sometimes the answer is that it is finished.
Does the furniture have to leave my home?
It depends on the work. Re-gluing, hardware, mechanisms and small seam repairs are done on site in one visit. Recovering, foam replacement and frame rebuilds are workshop work. In a condo that is two booked elevator windows plus transport, so ask which the quote assumes before you accept.
What should I send with the post?
Photographs of the damage close up and of the whole piece from a few steps back, the make if you know it, and a picture of the route out — the doorway, the stairs and the turn at the top. That last one decides whether a workshop repair is even possible, which no description of the fabric can.
