The price of a local move is decided by three things, and the amount of stuff is only one of them. The other two are access at both ends and the date. A two-bedroom on the ground floor with a driveway and a two-bedroom on the third floor of a walk-up are the same volume and a very different job, and a move on the last Saturday of the month costs more than the same move ten days earlier because every lease in the city turns over at once.
The elevator is the thing that most often goes wrong in Toronto. Most condo buildings require the service lift to be booked, usually in a block of hours, often with a deposit and a certificate of insurance from the moving company. If the booking is not made, or the block is too short, the move stops — and you pay for the crew standing in the loading dock either way. Book both ends before you book the movers, and tell the movers the exact window, because a crew that knows they have four hours will load differently from one that thinks they have all day.
Stairs and distance from the truck are the second driver. A long carry from a permitted parking spot to the front door adds real time, and in the older parts of the city — the Annex, Cabbagetown, Leslieville — street parking may need a permit from the city or the truck cannot legally sit there. Narrow Victorian staircases put a hard ceiling on what furniture can go up intact, and the honest movers will tell you a sofa is not making that turn before they try, rather than after they have removed your bannister.
What you can control is preparation. Everything boxed and closed before the crew arrives, beds broken down, anything fragile carried personally, and a clear decision on what is not coming. Movers priced by the hour are the only trade where an hour of your own work the night before comes straight off the bill, and the difference between a well-prepared and an unprepared two-bedroom is routinely a couple of hours.
Insurance is the part nobody reads until they need it. Basic released-value coverage that comes with a move is calculated by weight rather than worth, which is close to nothing for anything electronic or sentimental. Ask what the mover carries, whether it is replacement value, and what the deductible is. If you are moving something genuinely valuable — instruments, art, a desktop with work on it — the honest answer is usually to carry it yourself, and any mover worth booking will tell you the same thing rather than talk you into coverage.

Lease turnover
The whole city moves on the same weekend
Ontario leases overwhelmingly start on the first of the month, so the last weekend before it is the busiest and the most expensive in the GTA. The same two-bedroom booked ten days earlier is a materially cheaper move, and mid-month midweek is cheaper again.
Tower rules
The service lift, the deposit and the insurance certificate
Most GTA condo buildings require a booked service elevator in a fixed block of hours, a deposit, and a certificate of insurance naming the corporation. Miss any of the three and the move stops at the loading dock while the clock runs.
Old Toronto streets
A truck cannot always legally park outside
In the Annex, Cabbagetown, Leslieville and much of the older core, a moving truck needs a City parking permit or it cannot sit there. The long carry from wherever it can park is real time, and it is priced.
Winter moves
Salt, ice and floor protection are part of the job here
A January move needs walkways cleared and floors protected at both ends, and a crew that has to salt a path before carrying a wardrobe down it is a slower crew. Winter dates are quieter and cheaper for exactly this reason.
