What makeup artist actually costs here, and why

Makeup is booked against a date, and that single fact shapes everything else about hiring one. There is one of them and one chair, so an artist is either free on your morning or they are not, and no amount of budget moves a Saturday in wedding season. So book far earlier than feels necessary, and expect the good ones to be holding dates months out. Everything else in this category is negotiable. The calendar is not.

Bridal and event work are priced and planned differently, so say which you want. Event, party or photoshoot makeup is usually one face, one look, an hour or so, and it can often be arranged at short notice. Bridal is a project: a trial weeks beforehand to settle the look in daylight and in photographs, then an early call time on the day, frequently for several faces in sequence, at a venue rather than at home. That is why bridal quotes carry travel and a timeline — the schedule is part of what you are buying.

On hygiene, be direct about what you can and cannot verify. There is no provincial licence for makeup artistry in Ontario, and no certification anyone can check on your behalf, so assess what is observable. Brushes cleaned and sanitised between faces. Product decanted onto a palette rather than an applicator going back into the pot. Disposable wands for mascara and gloss, single use. If you have reactive skin, or are trying an unfamiliar product line, a patch test a couple of days beforehand matters more than any credential would — and asking for one on a trial is an entirely normal request.

The GTA shapes this category in a way a generic page will not tell you. Weddings across this region are frequently multi-day and multi-event, with a different look for each ceremony — a booking is often several call times, not one appointment, and it is worth describing that up front. And clients here span an enormous range of skin tones and undertones, which makes the portfolio the whole assessment: ask to see finished work on skin like yours, photographed in ordinary light rather than in a studio. An artist whose kit genuinely covers your range will be glad to show you.

Make the enquiry easy to answer and you get better offers. Send a couple of photographs of yourself in daylight with no makeup on, one or two references of looks you like, the date, the venue, the time you need to be finished by, how many faces in total, and whether hair is wanted as well as makeup. Mention anything about your skin — sensitivity, acne, a recent treatment — that changes what should go on it. That is a five-minute message that removes almost every reason for a quote to change later.

Questions

Frequently asked

GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.

How Taskly works, in full

How far ahead should I book a makeup artist?

Earlier than feels necessary. There is one artist and one chair, so a Saturday between late spring and October is either free or it is not. Bridal diaries across the GTA are commonly held months ahead, and the trial has to fit in before the date as well as the day itself.

Do I need a trial?

For a wedding, yes. A trial settles the look in daylight and in photographs, which is where makeup behaves differently from how it looks in a mirror, and it is when to raise sensitivity or a patch test. For an event or a shoot, most people skip it and send reference photographs instead.

Are makeup artists licensed in Ontario?

There is no provincial licence for makeup artistry, and no certification anyone can verify on your behalf. What you can assess is real: the portfolio, whether brushes are sanitised between faces, whether product is decanted rather than double-dipped, and whether disposables are used once.

What if I have sensitive skin?

Say so when you enquire and ask for a patch test a couple of days before, especially with an unfamiliar product line. It is an ordinary request that a careful artist expects. Mention recent treatments too, since some products should not go onto skin that has just been worked on.

How do I know an artist can work with my skin tone?

Ask to see finished work on clients with skin like yours, photographed in ordinary light rather than studio light. Clients here span a very wide range of tones and undertones, and a kit built for one range will not automatically cover another. A good artist will be glad to show you.
