What does fence repair cost, and why did it lean?

Fence repair is priced by the post, because the post is almost always what failed. Boards, rails and a dragging gate are quick work at ground level. A leaning post means the footing never reached below the frost line, and putting that right is a dig rather than a fastening.

Ranges come from the same pricing engine a real task is quoted against. A new footing waits on underground locates, which are requested days before the work and are not the installer to skip. How we price

What a fence repair visit should cover

Two of these happen before anyone arrives, and they are the two that decide whether the day goes ahead at all.

A leaning post is frost, not wind

Water in the ground under a footing freezes, expands, and lifts whatever is sitting on top of it. A post concreted only two or three feet down gets picked up a little every winter and never settles all the way back, so after a few seasons the run racks over and the gate stops closing. Wind takes the blame and the post takes the fault. In the GTA a footing has to reach below the frost line, which is deeper than most people expect and deeper than a lot of existing fences were built to — and that is why the honest repair on a heaved post is a new hole rather than a brace. Bracing keeps it upright until the next freeze and no longer.

The dig is the part with a rule attached

Anything that puts a hole in the ground has to be preceded by underground locates: a free request that brings out the gas, hydro, water and telecom markings so a post auger does not find a service line. It takes days rather than minutes, which is why a fence repair booked for tomorrow that involves a new footing is a fence repair booked wrong. The other thing to settle before the day is whose fence it is. A run on the boundary belongs to both properties, and the version of this that goes badly is a post reset three inches onto the wrong side of a line nobody checked. Both conversations are free, and both are cheaper than what follows when they are skipped.

Questions

Fence repair questions

The ones this page owns — the rest live on the fencing page.

One post is leaning. Can it just be braced?

It can, and it will lean again after the next winter. A post that has heaved sits on a footing that never reached below the frost line, so the real fix is a new hole at the proper depth. Bracing is a sensible way to hold a run up until the ground is workable in spring.

My gate drags on the ground.

Usually the hinge post or the gate frame rather than the ground. A gate that has lost its diagonal brace goes out of square under its own weight, and a hinge post with nothing bracing it leans toward the opening. Both are ordinary repairs and neither needs the fence taken apart.

Repair the run, or replace it?

Count the posts. Tired boards on posts that are solid and plumb means re-boarding the existing frame, at a fraction of a new fence. If several posts move when you push them, or the bottoms have rotted at grade, the money goes into the new fence rather than another season of this one.

When can this be done?

Board, rail and gate work runs most of the year. Anything needing a hole waits for ground that is not frozen, which in the GTA means roughly the spring thaw to the first hard freeze — and the whole region books that window at once. Autumn schedules more easily than spring and the ground digs better.

Whose fence is it?

If it stands on the boundary, both of yours, and that is worth establishing before the work rather than after. Where the line is genuinely unclear the survey settles it, and checking a pin is far cheaper than moving a finished fence off a neighbour.
