Post this taskWhat carpet cleaning actually costs here, and why
Carpet cleaning is worth understanding before you buy it, because the method decides the result and almost nobody explains the difference. Hot-water extraction — what most people call steam cleaning — pushes heated solution into the pile and pulls it back out along with what was suspended in it. That is a genuinely different operation from vacuuming, which lifts what is sitting on the surface, and it is the reason an extracted carpet looks different rather than merely cleaner. Low-moisture methods exist and are fine for a light refresh or a space that cannot be out of use, but they do not do the same thing.
What extraction will not do is worth stating plainly, because it is where disappointment comes from. It removes soil; it does not reverse wear. A traffic lane where the pile has been crushed and abraded over years will come out clean and still look like a traffic lane, because the fibre itself is damaged and no amount of cleaning restores it. Old pet accidents that reached the underlay are the other honest limit: the carpet can be cleaned, and if the contamination is beneath it, the smell returns as soon as the humidity rises. A Tasker who tells you that before quoting is doing you a favour.
Drying is the part that affects your day. A properly extracted carpet in a normal GTA home is walkable in a few hours and fully dry in somewhere between six and twenty-four, depending on pile depth, how much air is moving and the time of year. February with the heat on is fast; a humid July afternoon with the windows shut is slow. Plan to keep the room out of use for the evening, open a window or run a fan if you can, and do not put furniture back onto damp pile without something under the feet, because wooden and metal legs will mark it.
Move what you can before the day. Most quotes assume the floor is clear, and time spent shifting a sofa is time not spent cleaning; a room that is empty when the Tasker arrives is a cheaper room. Say in the post roughly how many rooms and stairs are involved, whether there are pets, and whether there are specific marks you want treated — spot treatment is a different conversation from a general clean, and it is worth having before rather than after.

Local knowledge
Priced for how the GTA actually lives
Four things that change a carpet cleaning quote here, and nowhere else.
Method matters
Extraction and vacuuming are not the same operation
Hot-water extraction pushes heated solution into the pile and pulls it back out with what was suspended in it. A vacuum lifts what is sitting on top. That is why an extracted carpet looks different rather than merely cleaner, and why the two are not substitutes.
The honest limit
Cleaning removes soil; it does not reverse wear
A traffic lane where the pile has been crushed and abraded over years will come out clean and still read as a traffic lane. The fibre is damaged, and no method restores it. Anyone quoting a clean as a fix for wear is selling you a disappointment.
Pets and underlay
If it reached the underlay, the carpet is not the problem
An old pet accident that soaked through can be cleaned out of the carpet and still return as soon as humidity rises, because the contamination is underneath it. That is a lift-and-replace conversation rather than a cleaning one, and it is better had before the booking.
Drying time
The season decides how long the room is out of use
Walkable in a few hours, fully dry in six to twenty-four depending on pile, airflow and the month. February with the heating on is quick; a humid July afternoon with the windows shut is slow. Plan the evening around it rather than the hour.
Worth agreeing before the day
- How many rooms, and how many flights of stairs
- Whether furniture will be moved by you or by the Tasker
- Any specific marks you want treated, and roughly how old they are
- Whether there have been pet accidents, and whether they soaked through
- How long the room needs to be out of use, given the season

Questions
Frequently asked
GTA-specific answers to what people actually search for.
How long does carpet take to dry?
Walkable in a few hours and fully dry in roughly six to twenty-four, depending on pile depth, airflow and the season. Winter with the heating on is fast; a humid summer afternoon with the windows closed is slow. Open a window or run a fan and keep the room out of use for the evening.
Will cleaning remove a traffic lane?
It will remove the soil in it, and the lane will usually still be visible. Years of footfall crush and abrade the fibre itself, and that is wear rather than dirt — no method reverses it. A good result on a worn carpet is a clean worn carpet, and it is fair to expect that said up front.
Can old pet smells be removed?
If it stayed in the carpet, usually yes. If it reached the underlay, the carpet can be cleaned and the smell will return when humidity rises, because the source is underneath. That is a lift-and-replace job rather than a cleaning one, and it is worth establishing before booking.
Do I need to move the furniture?
A clear floor is a cheaper and better job. Most quotes assume the room is empty, and time spent shifting a sofa is time not spent cleaning. If you need furniture moved, say so in the post so it is priced — and put something under the feet before anything goes back onto damp pile.
How often should carpets be cleaned?
Every twelve to eighteen months for a normal household, and more often with pets, children or a hallway that takes winter salt. Between visits, the thing that actually preserves the pile is regular vacuuming and dealing with spills immediately rather than at the weekend.
