What does eavestrough repair cost, and what is actually broken?

Eavestrough repair — gutter repair, under the word most companies advertise — is priced by the section rather than by the house, and the fault is rarely the trough itself. A run that sags, overflows in one place or drips at a joint is telling you about its hangers, its slope, or the fascia board holding it up.

Ranges come from the same pricing engine a real task is quoted against. Rotten fascia, soffit and roof-edge work are separate — a repair that ignores the wood a trough is screwed into will not hold. How we price

What an eavestrough repair visit should cover

Ask for the fascia to be checked while the run is down. It is the finding that decides whether a repair is worth doing at all.

The trough is fine. The fascia is not.

Most eavestroughs in this city were hung on spikes driven through the front lip into the fascia board behind them. Water that has been overflowing a blocked run for a few winters gets into that board, the wood softens, and the spike no longer has anything to grip. What you see is a run pulling away at one end and pooling at the other; what is failing is the timber it is fastened to. That is why a useful repair starts with somebody putting a hand on the fascia rather than a screw back into the same hole, and why a new section hung on rotten wood comes down again. Hidden hangers screwed into sound fascia are the fix where the wood is still good, and where it is not, the wood comes first.

Slope, seams, and the frost that opens them

A trough is meant to fall gently toward its downspout, and a run that has lost that fall holds standing water. In a GTA winter that water freezes, expands and works at every joint, which is why sealed seams here open again after a few seasons rather than lasting the way they do in a milder market. It is also why a seamless run rolled on site from a single length of coil outlasts a sectional one on a long roofline: fewer joints means fewer places for ice to lever apart. If a repair is the third one on the same run, the arithmetic usually favours replacing that section instead — and an offer worth accepting will say so before it quotes the sealant.

Questions

Eavestrough repair questions

The ones this page owns — the rest live on the roofing page.

It overflows at the front edge. Is that a repair?

Clear it first. A trough packed with debris overflows in exactly the way a broken one does, and clearing is the cheaper visit. If it still sheets over the front after it has been cleared and the downspout flushed, then the slope, a crushed section or the outlet is the problem.

What is behind a sagging run?

Usually the fascia. Spikes driven into wood that has been wet for several winters lose their grip, and the run pulls away under the weight of water it can no longer move. Refastening into the same soft board buys a season. Ask for the wood to be checked while the section is down.

Can a seam be resealed, or does the section have to go?

A clean joint takes sealant well and holds for years. A joint already sealed twice, or one where the metal has corroded through at the lap, is a section replacement. On a long roofline a seamless run made on site removes the joints altogether, which is a large part of why it lasts here.

Is this the same as gutter repair?

The same work. Eavestrough is the older Canadian word and is searched here about as often as gutter, while most companies advertise the second one. Either word brings back the same offers, and this page uses both so that either one finds it.

Should the whole line be replaced?

Rarely, and not on the evidence of one bad section. Runs fail where the water sat, which is usually one stretch under a valley or a heavy tree. Replace that stretch, and look at the whole line only if the metal is corroding in several places at once or the profile is too small for the roof above it.
