Two windows, and they are not interchangeable

Late autumn, after the last leaves are down, is the one that matters most — troughs full going into a GTA winter are the ones that freeze. Spring is the second: winter grit, shingle granules and whatever blew in, cleared before the heavy rain. Houses under mature maples in the older parts of the city often need both, and a few need a third pass in early autumn just for the keys.

How a blocked trough becomes a ceiling stain

Meltwater runs down a roof, hits the cold overhang past the heated envelope and refreezes; a blocked trough gives it somewhere to pool and build. Once a ridge forms at the eaves, water backs up under the shingles and comes through the ceiling inside. The trough is not the cause — attic insulation and ventilation are — but a clear trough and a working downspout are the cheapest part of the fix and the part you can do in October.

Where the water goes afterwards

A downspout discharging a foot from the wall is putting the entire roof back against the foundation. Extensions, splash blocks and a grade that falls away from the house are what actually keep basements dry, and they are worth checking while someone is already up there. It is the cheap half of a wet-basement problem, and it is almost always worth ruling out before anyone prices excavation.

How often do they need clearing?

It depends almost entirely on what is overhead. A house under mature maples in an older Toronto neighbourhood usually needs autumn and spring, sometimes a third pass for the keys. A house with nothing near the roofline can go a year or two. If water sheets over the front edge in heavy rain, it is already overdue.

When is the best time?

Do guards mean I never have to clear them again?
