Typical sink installation in Toronto & the GTA
What does it cost to fit a sink or a tap, and who is allowed to do it?
Swapping a tap or fitting a sink into an existing opening with existing supply lines is ordinary handyman work and a short visit. Moving the supply, altering the drain inside the wall, or anything that opens the water main is licensed plumbing. Most kitchen and vanity work falls on the handyman side of that line.
Ranges come from the same pricing engine a real task is quoted against and cover labour. The tap, sink or vanity is bought separately, and agreeing who buys it before the day is the most common cause of a second visit. How we price
Sink and tap fitting by size of job
| Job | Typical range | Time | Crew |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tap swapped, or a toilet seat fitted | $90–$180 | 30–60 min | 1 |
| Sink fitted into an existing opening, trap reconnected | $160–$360 | 2–4 hrs | 1 |
| Several fittings, or a vanity swapped with the sink | $325–$720 | 5–8 hrs | 1–2 |

What to have ready before the visit
Five checks, and the first one settles whether this is a handyman job at all.
- Whether the supply lines and drain stay exactly where they are — if they move, this is a plumber
- Whether you have the new tap or sink already, or want it bought for you
- The number of tap holes in the counter or sink, and the spacing between them
- Where the shutoff valves are under the sink, and whether they still turn
- For a condo: whether the building needs the riser shut off, and who books that
The line is whether anything moves
The useful question is not what the fixture is, it is whether the pipework changes. A tap coming off and a new one going onto the same supply lines is a fixture swap. A sink dropping into the opening the old one came out of, with the trap reconnected underneath, is a fixture swap. Once the supply has to be extended, the drain has to be re-cut, or the main has to be shut and opened, it is licensed plumbing and it belongs on a different page. The reason this matters on price is that the licensed job costs more for good reasons, and paying licensed rates for a tap swap is the most common way to overpay in this category.

Tap holes and shutoffs are what go wrong
Two small things cause most of the aborted visits. The first is hole count: a single-lever mixer does not drop into a three-hole counter without a base plate, and a bridge tap needs the spacing to match. Count the holes and measure between the centres before you buy anything. The second is the shutoff valves under the sink. In older GTA housing stock they are frequently seized, and a valve that will not close turns a half-hour swap into a job that needs the riser or the main shut off — which in a condo means the building, and a date rather than an afternoon. Try turning them a quarter turn before you post.
Kitchen sinks are heavier work than vanities
A bathroom vanity sink is usually light, accessible and held by a clip or a bead of sealant. A kitchen sink is a different job: undermount units are clamped to the underside of the counter and bedded in sealant that has to be cut out, the bowl is heavy enough to want a second pair of hands, and a waste disposal unit or a filtered tap adds connections that were not in the original. If your kitchen sink is undermount rather than top-mount, say so when you post — it is the single detail that most changes the time and therefore the offer.
