Certified and general are two different pieces of work

Most translation work is sold through agencies that rank you, pay by the word and pay late. Tasks here name the document, the language pair and the budget before you accept, and the work is remote by definition, so where you live never limits what you can take. The one thing that does limit it is whether the document needs a certified translator — and posters rarely know.

What the tasks actually look like

Documents for personal use, website and marketing copy, subtitles, an email thread somebody needs to understand today, and interpreting on a call. Then the other kind entirely: transcripts, civil documents and certificates going into an immigration or academic file, where the receiving body will refuse anything that is not properly certified. Read which one you are being asked for.

Questions

Translation work on Taskly

The ones people in this trade actually ask before they sign up.

Do I need certification to take translation tasks?

Not for general translation — there is no licence for it in Ontario, and most of what gets posted is general. Certified translation is a separate thing: ATIO is the certifying body here, and official and legal work asks for a certified translator by name rather than for a good one.

Somebody wants a translation for their immigration file. Can I do it?

Check what the receiving body accepts before you offer. Official files generally want a certified translator; where the translator is not certified, an affidavit of accuracy sworn before a commissioner of oaths is usually required alongside, and courts are stricter again. A rejected translation costs somebody a filing date, so say plainly which you are.

Should I price per word or per document?

Say which in your offer. Posters here think in documents rather than word counts, and a per-word rate they cannot work out before agreeing is where this category stalls. Certificates and transcripts suit a flat figure; long copy is where a rate per word earns its keep.

Taskly is new in the GTA. Fewer Taskers means your offer actually gets read instead of sitting behind two hundred others — and the people here first will hold the first reviews.

Every word of that is true, and it is the argument no big platform can copy.
