The Law Society line, before you make an offer

In Ontario the practice of law and the provision of legal services are reserved by the Law Society Act to licensed lawyers and licensed paralegals. Settle that first, because the searches that reach this page — paralegal, legal assistant — are mostly firm positions, and this is not a firm. Hold an L1 or P1 licence and you can be engaged directly. Without one, what is open to you is the administrative half.

What the tasks actually look like

Document formatting and assembly, transcription, a filing run to a courthouse, intake and calendar support for a sole practitioner, scanning a banker's box of discovery before a deadline. None of that is advice and none of it is representation. The moment a task asks you to interpret a rule, tell somebody what to do, or appear for them, it needs a licence.

Can I take legal work without a Law Society licence?

Not legal services. Advice, drafting that decides somebody's position, and appearing before a court or tribunal are licensed activities in Ontario, and no marketplace changes that. Clerical and administrative work around a practice is open, and it is most of what gets posted. Being straight about which one you are offering is what gets you the next task.

What can a licensed paralegal actually take here?

Whatever your P1 scope already permits — Small Claims, Provincial Offences, certain tribunals — and nothing outside it. Say in your offer which matters you are licensed for and which you are not, because posters generally cannot tell a lawyer from a paralegal and will assume the wider answer unless you tell them.

Does Taskly check that I am licensed?
