Books and returns, remote, priced per engagement

Most bookkeeping work is either an employer or a firm, and both decide your hours. Here a small business or a sole trader posts what they need — a year cleaned up, a monthly reconciliation, a return prepared — and you price the engagement. Do I need to be a CPA?

For bookkeeping, no — and most of what is posted is bookkeeping. Anything that is a CPA engagement is a CPA engagement, and saying clearly in your offer what you are qualified to sign is the difference between a good match and an awkward one.

Is this remote work?

Almost entirely. A poster in Oshawa and a bookkeeper in Mississauga is a normal pairing here, which also means you are competing on the work rather than on the drive. Say in your profile that you work remotely.

How do I handle access to their records?

Agree it in the chat before you start — read-only accountant access to their software is the usual answer and it is better for both sides than a shared login. Posters who have been burned once will ask; the ones who have not will appreciate you raising it.
