Design work priced by the room, not the retainer

An interior design practice lives on a pipeline: a referral, a showhome, and months of unpaid conversation before anyone signs. Tasks here start from somebody who has already decided — a room they cannot resolve, a palette, a furniture plan with a delivery date behind it. You price the piece of work rather than a package, which is what makes this fit around a practice you are still building.

What the tasks actually look like

Room layouts and furniture plans, colour and material selection, mood boards before a renovation starts, sourcing lists for somebody with the budget but not the eye, and staging advice before a sale. Condo work dominates in the GTA: small rooms, one awkward wall, and a single window that decides everything. Much of it is remote — a floor plan, photographs and a call.

Questions

Interior Designer work on Taskly

The ones people in this trade actually ask before they sign up.

Do I need ARIDO registration to take this work?

No. "Interior designer" is not a protected title in Ontario the way "architect" is, so nothing stops you offering. ARIDO membership is what clients read as qualification, though, so name it if you hold it and name your training and your finished rooms if you do not.

What happens when the client wants a wall moved?

It stops being a decoration question and becomes a building one. Anything structural — removing a wall, widening an opening, changing what carries the load above it — needs a licensed architect or professional engineer. Say so, stay on the design side of the line, and the client trusts the rest of your advice more, not less.

Am I sourcing and buying the furnishings as well?

Only if your offer says so, and it should say which. Specifying a list is different work from purchasing, chasing delivery and handling a return, and a trade discount the client assumes is being passed on is a conversation to have before you order rather than when the invoice lands.

Taskly is new in the GTA. Fewer Taskers means your offer actually gets read instead of sitting behind two hundred others — and the people here first will hold the first reviews.

Every word of that is true, and it is the argument no big platform can copy.
