Small masonry, in a city built out of brick

The GTA's housing stock is brick and a great deal of it is a century old, so the work here is repair rather than build: mortar gone soft, a garden wall leaning, front steps spalling after twenty winters of road salt. A crew cannot price half a day of repointing without losing money on it. One person with a mixer and a grinder can, and that gap is what gets posted.

What the tasks actually look like

Repointing a section of wall, rebuilding a pier or a set of front steps, a window sill replaced, a garden wall taken down and reset, a foundation parged, a chimney crown patched. Nearly all residential and nearly all weather-bound — mortar will not cure below freezing, so the season runs roughly April to November and the autumn is the busy end of it.

Questions

Bricklayer work on Taskly

The ones people in this trade actually ask before they sign up.

Do I need a certificate of qualification?

Brick and stone masonry is a voluntary trade in Ontario, so no certificate is legally required to take this work — and that cuts both ways. A poster cannot tell skill from a photograph of a wall, so name your training in your offer and put pictures of your own joints in your profile. Taskly does not verify trade credentials.

What about working at height?

Anything beyond a couple of courses on a scaffold or up on a roof puts you on a construction project, and Ontario requires working-at-heights training for that. Say in your offer how you intend to reach the work, because a poster picturing a stepladder and a Tasker picturing a scaffold have not agreed on the same price.

What about chimney work?

The masonry is yours. Anything to do with a flue serving a gas appliance is not — that is TSSA territory. The honest offer quotes the brick and the crown and tells them who to call about the rest, before they assume you meant both.

Taskly is new in the GTA. Fewer Taskers means your offer actually gets read instead of sitting behind two hundred others — and the people here first will hold the first reviews.

Every word of that is true, and it is the argument no big platform can copy.
