What the title means in Ontario, and what the work still is

"Architect" is a protected title here. The OAA licenses it, and without that licence you are a designer or a drafter however good the drawings are — a stamped set needs a licensed architect or a professional engineer. That closes off less than it sounds. The work below the stamp is posted far more often than a stamped set, and by people who have already been quoted for the full service.

What the tasks actually look like

Floor plans drawn up from a measure-up, renderings and visualisations of a scheme somebody is trying to picture, CAD drafting from another person’s sketch, feasibility studies for a basement or a rear addition, and preparing the drawing package a permit application is built from. Homeowners and small builders, wanting one part of a service rather than all of it.

Questions

Architects work on Taskly

The ones people in this trade actually ask before they sign up.

Can I call myself an architect if I am not licensed?

No. The title and its variations are protected in Ontario and the OAA enforces that, so anything implying the licence is out unless you hold it. Designer, drafter, architectural technologist — whichever is true — is legal and, in an offer where the poster is comparing people, considerably clearer.

Who can stamp the drawings?

A licensed architect or a licensed professional engineer, depending on the work, and nothing about working independently changes that. House permit drawings are the separate case worth knowing: Ontario’s Building Code lets a Qualified Designer with a BCIN prepare them within the categories they are registered in.

What are posters actually asking for?

Usually one deliverable rather than a service: a plan they can hand a builder, a rendering to settle an argument at home, or drafting from a sketch that already exists. State what you are producing, what it is not, and whether it is suitable for submission. That last sentence prevents most of the trouble here.

Taskly is new in the GTA. Fewer Taskers means your offer actually gets read instead of sitting behind two hundred others — and the people here first will hold the first reviews.

Every word of that is true, and it is the argument no big platform can copy.
