What does door repair cost, and why does the door stick?
Door repair is priced by what failed rather than by the door. A door that sticks, drags or will not latch is usually its hinges and its frame moving, not the door swelling. One door is different: the one between an attached garage and the house is a fire separation, and it has to close and latch by itself.
Ranges come from the same pricing engine a real task is quoted against. A rotten frame, a new slab or a pre-hung unit is a replacement rather than a repair, and it is quoted separately. How we price
What a door repair visit should cover
Half of these take ten minutes and are the reason the door started sticking. Ask for all of them while somebody is standing at the opening.
- The gap around the door read all the way round before anything is planed
- Hinge screws driven into solid framing, with longer screws where the old ones spin
- The strike plate moved to meet the latch, rather than the door forced to meet it
- Weatherstripping, threshold and sweep looked at on any exterior door
- The door from an attached garage tested to close and latch on its own
- On a slider, the track cleaned out and the rollers adjusted before either is replaced
A sticking door is almost never the door
A door hangs on three screws that have to hold the whole weight of it in the edge of a frame, and in an older GTA house the frame is fixed to a building that has been settling for a century. What actually happens is that the top hinge screws work loose in soft wood, the door drops a few millimetres at the outer top corner, and that corner starts to catch. The fix is a pair of long screws through the hinge into the framing behind the jamb, which pulls the door back square and costs nothing. Humidity is the smaller half of the story and it is the half everyone blames — a door that binds every August and clears every October is seasonal, and a door that binds in the same place all year is hardware. Planing is the one intervention that cannot be undone, so it belongs last: plane a door in August and you have a gap in February.

An exterior door is a seal and a lock, not a panel
The draught you feel at the front door is almost never coming through it. It is the weatherstripping around the frame gone hard, the sweep along the bottom worn through where the salt and grit are, or a threshold whose adjustable insert has dropped. All three are short, cheap visits and all three are the difference between a door that seals in July and one that whistles at minus fifteen. Security is the same story: a deadbolt is only as good as the strike plate it throws into, and a strike fixed with the short screws that came in the box is holding onto trim rather than into the stud behind it. Patio sliders are their own case — a door that drags is nine times out of ten grit packed into the bottom track rather than a failed roller, and the track is cleaned before anything is bought.
