Typical drain cleaning in Toronto & the GTA
What does drain cleaning cost, and when is snaking not the answer?
Drain cleaning is priced by where the blockage is, not by how bad it looks. One slow sink is a trap or a branch line and is quick. Water backing up at the lowest fixture in the house is the main line, and in the older parts of Toronto that usually means tree roots in a clay lateral.
Ranges come from the same pricing engine a real task is quoted against. Excavation, lining and anything that alters the drain itself is licensed, permitted work and is quoted separately. How we price
What a drain visit should cover
The difference between a cleared drain and a solved problem is whether anybody found out why it blocked.
- The blockage located first — which fixtures are affected, and where it backs up
- An accessible cleanout used rather than a toilet pulled, where one exists
- The line run to the full length of the cable, not only until the water moves
- The drain tested by emptying a full tub or running a hose, not by opening a tap
- What came back on the cutter head described to you — roots, grease, wipes or scale
- A camera offered if this drain has blocked before
One fixture, or all of them
The most useful thing you can put in a post is which fixtures are affected. A slow bathroom sink with everything else running normally is a trap or the branch behind that wall, and it is half an hour of work at the fixture. A basement floor drain or a ground-floor toilet backing up while the upstairs shower drains fine is the main line, because water finds the lowest opening it can reach. That one distinction changes the equipment, the access point, the time and the price, and it is the detail most posts leave out.

Roots, grease, and what actually goes down a drain
Large parts of the older city still drain through clay laterals laid in short sections, and mature street trees find the joints. Root intrusion is seasonal, it returns, and a cable cuts a channel through it rather than removing it — which is why a drain that clears every eighteen months is telling you something a second snaking will not fix. Grease is the other one, and it is not the kitchen sink that suffers but the horizontal run beyond it. Wipes sold as flushable do not break down and are the commonest cause of a main-line blockage in a house with no trees near it at all. Chemical drain cleaner is worth avoiding for a reason that is not environmental: it sits above the clog, it is still caustic when somebody opens that trap an hour later, and it does nothing whatever to roots.
