In Ontario, plumbing work is a compulsory trade: 306A licensed plumbers do plumbing work, and that is not a formality anybody negotiates around. If you hold the ticket, this is a route to work without a dispatcher taking a cut. If you do not, there is a genuine and long list of adjacent work here that is not plumbing — and it is better to know which is which now than after an offer.

What the tasks actually look like

Licensed: fixture installs, repairs, drain and supply work, anything behind a wall. Not licensed and posted constantly: clearing a slow drain, swapping a shower head or a toilet seat, insulating pipe in a cold crawlspace, fitting a fridge water line, replacing a tap washer. Posters rarely know which is which, so read the task before you offer.

Can I take plumbing tasks without a licence?

Not plumbing work. Ontario treats it as a compulsory trade and that is the whole answer. What you can take is the adjacent work — drain clearing, insulation, fixture swaps that do not open the system — and being straight about the difference in your offer is what gets you the next one.

Do I need my own insurance?

You are independent here, so whatever you carry is yours and it is worth having. Posters on larger tasks increasingly ask, and being able to answer without hedging is a real advantage over the offer sitting next to yours.

How do emergencies work?

Posters mark urgency in the task and you decide whether to answer it. Same-day work prices higher for the obvious reason, and it is where a licensed plumber on this platform earns most — but it also means being reachable, which not everyone wants.
