What does moving & hauling cost in Toronto?

Across the GTA local moves price between $200 and $2,200, and Toronto sits inside that band. What moves a quote here is almost never the volume — it is the carry. How far the truck can get from the door, how many turns the stairs take, and which floor the storage locker is on.

What changes a moving quote in Toronto

The turn on the landing, not the flight of stairs

Victorian and Edwardian semis through Riverdale, Cabbagetown and Parkdale run their staircases up a narrow well with a quarter-turn at the landing. The stairs are not the problem — the turn is, because it sets a hard ceiling on the longest rigid object that can go up intact. A three-seat sofa and a box spring are the two things that regularly do not make it, and a crew that knows the shape of the house before arriving prices a hoist or a disassembly instead of discovering it at the door.

Below grade, through a side door

Toronto rents more basement apartments than any other city in the region, and the move into one runs through an exterior side stair that is usually uncovered, often steep, and frequently narrower than the interior one. Headroom below is the second constraint: wardrobes and tall shelving that fit the room do not always clear the beam on the way in. Saying "basement unit, side entrance" in the task post changes which crew makes an offer, not just what they charge.

The locker is on a different level from the unit

In most downtown towers the storage locker sits two or three parking levels below the suite, reached by a separate lift or a long ramp, and it is emptied on a different trip from the apartment. Crews that have worked the building know that; crews that have not quote the suite and meet the locker afterwards. Say the locker level and roughly what is in it, and the number you are given covers the whole job.

The move is priced in traffic, not kilometres

A move from the west end to Scarborough is under 25 km and can take a loaded truck two hours if it crosses the core between four and six. Crews plan around the Gardiner and the DVP the way any trade does, which is why an early start is worth more in Toronto than anywhere else in the GTA, and why a mid-morning booking on a weekday is often the cheapest slot on offer.

Questions

Movers & moving services in Toronto

The answers that are specific to this city — the general ones live on the category page.

Will a sofa fit up a Toronto semi staircase?

Often not, and the flight is rarely what stops it — the quarter-turn at the landing is. Measure the diagonal of the sofa against the width at the turn before you book. A crew that is told the shape in advance can price a balcony hoist or a leg-off disassembly rather than stopping halfway up and asking.

What should I say about a basement apartment when I post?

Say it is below grade, whether the entrance is the exterior side stair or the interior one, and roughly how low the ceiling is. That is what decides whether a wardrobe fits and how many crew are worth sending. It is the single most useful sentence on a Toronto move post, and it costs you nothing.

Does my condo storage locker need mentioning separately?

Yes. In most downtown buildings the locker is two or three levels below the suite and is a separate trip with a separate lift. A crew that only quoted the apartment will treat the locker as extra time on the day. Name the level and what is in it up front.

Is it cheaper to move across Toronto or out to the suburbs?

Distance matters less than the clock. A cross-town move that runs through the core at rush hour can cost more than a longer run out the 401 at ten in the morning, because the crew is paid for the time either way. Ask for an early start and the numbers usually improve.

How much notice do movers in Toronto need?

A week is comfortable and three days is usually workable for a one-bedroom. The two exceptions are the last weekend before the first of the month, when every crew in the region is booked, and any move that needs a building lift window, which the building sets rather than the mover.
