Cats do not travel, which is the whole of it

A dog can go to a boarding kennel. A cat put in a carrier and moved somewhere unfamiliar stops eating, so an owner going away needs somebody to come to the flat instead. That is a visit, once or twice a day, for as long as the trip lasts — short, close to home, and booked by people who will almost certainly need it again the same month next year.

What the tasks actually look like

Drop-in visits: food, water, the litter tray, ten minutes of company, and a photograph sent so somebody in an airport stops worrying. Medication for older cats comes up constantly and is the part that decides who gets booked. Also an introduction before the trip, brushing for long-haired cats, and the occasional rescue who will not come out from under the bed while you are there.

How many visits a day is normal?

One or two, and the poster usually knows which. Say what a visit includes and how long you stay, because "feed the cat" and "twenty minutes so she is not alone" are different tasks at different prices, and posters use exactly the same words for both.

What do I do about keys?

Agree it in the chat before the booking. Handing over in person beforehand is the usual answer and a lockbox is the second. Say how you label a key — never with the address — and when you will return it. Owners worry about this considerably more than they say in the task.

What if the cat hides the entire time?

Many will, and it is not a failure. Do the food, the water and the tray, check that the bowl has gone down since your last visit, and send the photograph anyway. Write what you did see, because "no sighting, but she has eaten" is genuinely reassuring and silence is not.
