What does tree pruning cost, and when should it be done?

Tree pruning is priced by access and by height, not by how many branches come off. Most structural work is done in the dormant season, when the shape is visible and the tree is not pushing growth. Anything within reach of a hydro conductor is the utility’s clearance work and not a task to post here.

Ranges come from the same pricing engine a real task is quoted against. Stump work, removal and anything needing a lift are separate — and a climbed tree over a roof is a different task from the same tree over a lawn. How we price

What a pruning visit should cover

Pruning is subtraction and none of it grows back, so what is agreed before the saw starts matters more here than on any other outdoor task.

The season decides more than the price does

Most structural pruning belongs in the dormant months, roughly late autumn to early spring. The leaves are off, so the shape and the crossing limbs are visible; the tree is not spending stored energy on growth it is about to lose; and the ground is firm enough to work from. There are species exceptions worth knowing before you book. Maple, birch and walnut bleed heavily from cuts made as the sap rises in early spring — harmless to the tree, alarming to look at, and avoided by pruning them in summer instead. Oaks across the Great Lakes region are pruned in the cold months, because a fresh cut in the growing season is what attracts the beetles that carry oak wilt from one tree to the next. Storm damage is the standing exception: a broken limb comes off when it breaks, whatever the calendar says.

Topping is not pruning, and it costs twice

Topping is cutting the crown back to stubs to make a tree shorter, and it is the single most expensive thing that gets done to trees in this region. The stubs have no branch collar to close the wound, so they decay inward. The tree responds to losing its canopy by throwing dense clusters of fast, weakly attached shoots from just below every cut — which in a few years is taller, heavier and far more likely to fail in a storm than what was there before. The honest version is thinning and reduction cuts back to a lateral branch big enough to take over, and a healthy mature tree does not want more than about a quarter of its live crown removed in one season. A quote offering to take a third off the height is not describing pruning.

Questions

Tree pruning questions

The ones this page owns — the rest live on the tree surgeons page.

When is the best time to prune?

The dormant season for anything structural — late autumn to early spring, when the shape is visible and the tree is not pushing growth. Deadwood can come out any time. Maple, birch and walnut are better left until summer because they bleed heavily from early-spring cuts.

Can a tree be pruned in summer?

Yes, for size control, clearance over a path or a roof, and deadwood. Summer is also when a weak or diseased limb is easiest to spot, because it is the one with no leaves on it. Save heavy structural work for the dormant months, when the tree can afford it.

How much can safely come off at once?

As a working rule, not more than about a quarter of the live crown in one season, and less on an older tree. Leaves are how a tree feeds itself, so a hard cut is a bill it pays back over years. Two lighter visits a season apart beat one heavy one.

Can I just have it made shorter?

Not by topping it. Cutting the crown back to stubs leaves wounds that cannot close and produces dense, weakly attached regrowth that is more dangerous than the original limbs. Real height reduction is cutting back to laterals big enough to take over, and there is a limit to how far it goes.
