What does duct cleaning cost, and is it worth doing?

Duct cleaning is quoted per vent or as a whole-system price, and the two are not comparable — a count of supply and return openings is what makes a quote checkable. It is worth doing after a renovation, after a rodent problem, or when a house changes hands, and it is not a yearly requirement.

Ranges come from the same pricing engine a real task is quoted against. Dryer vents, sanitising and anything inside the furnace cabinet are separate — count your supply and return openings before comparing two prices. How we price

What a duct cleaning visit should cover

The count is the contract. Agree the number of openings before anyone arrives and the price cannot move at the door.

The number that makes a quote checkable

A very low whole-home price advertised without a vent count is the oldest pattern in this trade and the GTA sees a lot of it. The advertised figure covers a fixed number of openings, the house has more, and the difference is priced at the door by somebody already standing in the basement. It is not always a bait — some of those companies do good work at the real number. Either way the fix is on your side and it takes ten minutes: walk the house, count every supply register and every cold-air return, and put that count in the post. A price quoted against a count is a price you can hold someone to.

What it does, and the two things it does not

It removes settled construction dust, drywall grit, pet hair and whatever a previous owner left in the trunk lines, and after a renovation or a rodent problem that is a real, visible result. It does not fix mould, because mould in a duct means moisture is arriving from somewhere — a humidifier, a leak, a cold surface — and cleaning it away without finding the source is a visit you will repeat. And it is not an allergy treatment. The evidence that a routine clean improves symptoms in an ordinary, dry house is thin, and a filter with a higher rating changed on time does more for the air in the room than an annual clean does.

Questions

Duct cleaning questions

The ones this page owns — the rest live on the cleaning page.

How often should ducts be cleaned?

Not on a schedule. The reasons that hold up are a renovation, a rodent or insect problem, moving into a house whose history you do not know, or visible debris blowing out of a register. A house with none of those and a filter changed on time can go many years without one.

Why is one quote a third of another?

Almost always the vent count, sometimes the equipment. A vacuum connected to the trunk line removes dust from the building; a shop vacuum held at each register mostly moves it around. Ask what is connected where, and give both companies the same count of openings to price against.

Will it help my allergies?

Possibly, if there is something in the ducts that should not be there. As a routine measure in an ordinary house the evidence is weak, and a better filter changed on time does more for what you actually breathe than an annual clean does. Anyone promising relief is selling past the work.

Should the dryer vent be done at the same time?

It is a different duct and usually a separate line, and it is the one with a real safety case: lint packed into a long or crushed dryer run is a fire risk and it roughly doubles drying time. Ask for it explicitly rather than assuming a whole-home price includes it.
