Most of what looks broken is the filter and the drain

The two commonest complaints — it is not draining, and it is not cleaning — are usually the same end of the machine. Food debris collects in the filter at the bottom, and machines with a filter instead of a hard-food grinder need it taken out and rinsed on a schedule almost nobody is told about. Behind it, the drain hose has to rise into a high loop or an air gap before it falls to the trap, and a hose knocked down when somebody last worked under the sink lets sink water run back into the machine. Built-in, condo, and why a quote moves at the door

A freestanding machine rolls out on a smooth floor and the whole repair is at the front. A built-in is fastened to the counter, sits on levelling feet, and has its supply, drain and power routed through a cabinet side that was closed in after installation — and a panel-ready one carries a cabinet door that has to come off first. That is a materially different visit, and it is the commonest reason a GTA appliance quote changes after the technician arrives. In a condo it compounds: many buildings want the service lift booked and the visitor registered, and if the machine has to leave the building, the loading dock decides the day rather than the repair does. It is not draining. Is that expensive?

Usually not. Check the filter at the bottom and the drain hose under the sink first — a hose knocked out of its high loop lets water back in and mimics a failed pump exactly. If both are right, it is generally the drain pump, which is a routine part on most machines.

When is it not worth repairing?

When the part is a control board or the main circulation pump and the machine is past about eight years. Ask for the part cost and the labour separately before agreeing to anything: labour is predictable and parts are not, and half the price of a new machine is where most people stop.

It leaves a film on everything.

That is usually water and detergent rather than a fault. GTA tap water is moderately hard, which leaves a film that rinse aid exists to deal with, and detergent left in an open box loses its effect. Run a cleaning cycle and check the spray arms turn freely before booking a repair.

How long will the part take to arrive?

For a common brand, a day or two. For a European built-in, a panel-ready machine, or a model discontinued more than about seven years ago, a week to a month is normal rather than a sign anything has gone wrong. A technician who names the part and its lead time is telling you what actually sets the date.

Can it be repaired in a condo without moving it?

Most repairs are done in place. Where the machine does have to come out, some buildings require the service lift booked and the technician registered at the desk, and hours are often restricted.
