Mobile work, without a bay and without a boss

Shop work means a bay, fixed hours and a service manager selling work you did not quote. Mobile work here is the opposite: the customer describes the fault, you decide whether it is something you can do at the roadside or on a driveway, and you set the price. Diagnostics, brakes, batteries and fluids do not need a hoist, and that is most of what gets posted.

What the tasks actually look like

Batteries and alternators, brake pads, oil and fluid changes, a pre-purchase inspection before somebody buys a used car, a no-start diagnosis in a driveway. Anything needing a hoist, an alignment rack or emissions equipment is not a mobile job, and the honest offer says so and points them to a shop.

Do I need my own tools and a vehicle?

Yes to both — this is mobile work by definition. Say in your offer what you carry, because a jump pack, a torque wrench and a scan tool are the difference between quoting confidently and turning up hopeful.

What about work I cannot do in a driveway?

Say so and decline it. A hoist job, an alignment or anything on the emissions system belongs in a shop, and a mobile offer that pretends otherwise ends with a car in pieces on somebody's street. Taking the work that suits a driveway is what keeps the reviews good.

Am I liable if something fails afterwards?

You are an independent operator here, so the arrangement between you and the customer is yours — and that means being clear in the chat about what you warranty and for how long. Most disputes in this category come from that being assumed rather than stated.
