The small work that pays, without the callout hunt

The problem with small repairs has never been finding them, it is finding enough of them close together to make the day worth driving. Tasks here carry the poster's own budget and their address, so you can build a run of four in one area rather than crossing the city for one shelf.

What the tasks actually look like

Mounting, assembly, a door that will not latch, the picture rail somebody has been meaning to fix since spring. Mostly under two hours and mostly things a person with a drill and some judgement can do properly. The awkward ones — old plaster, no stud where the bracket needs one — are worth flagging in your offer.

What Richmond Hill is made of

Richmond Hill is long and narrow. It runs north up Yonge Street from Highway 7 to the Oak Ridges Moraine and it climbs the whole way. The south end is 1970s and 1980s subdivision, the middle is heritage around the Mill Pond, and the north end is large lots on a protected landform.

Oak Ridges is on the height of land

The north end of Richmond Hill sits on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the ridge that divides water running south to Lake Ontario from water running north to Lake Simcoe. It is protected under its own provincial conservation plan, the lots up there are large and treed, and outdoor work — drainage, tree work, grading — runs into rules that do not apply in the south half of the same city.

The Mill Pond core is the old village

Around the Mill Pond and along Yonge north of Major Mackenzie is Richmond Hill’s nineteenth-century core: frame houses on small lots, mature trees closing over the road, and no rear access to speak of. It is a few streets wide and it behaves nothing like the Jefferson and Bayview Hill subdivisions around it, where the driveway takes three vehicles.

The town climbs about a hundred metres end to end

From Highway 7 at the south boundary to the moraine at the north, Richmond Hill gains roughly a hundred metres of elevation — a real climb, not a figure of speech. It is the reason the north end can still be frozen when the south end is wet, and the reason winter work here is usually scheduled north first. Flat towns like Ajax and Pickering have no equivalent.

Handyman work across Richmond Hill

Questions

Handyman work in Richmond Hill

The ones people in this trade actually ask before they sign up.

Do I need a trade licence for this work?

Not for general repairs, mounting or assembly. Anything that touches gas, or electrical beyond a fixture swap, needs the licence Ontario requires for that trade, and tasks that name one will ask you for it.

Can I quote for materials as well as labour?

Put the whole figure in your offer and say what it covers. A price that turns out to exclude the brackets is the thing posters remember, and it is easily avoided.

What if the repair needs a part I do not have?

Say so before you accept rather than halfway through. Most posters would rather rebook than have someone leave a hole in the wall while they go to the hardware store.

Taskly is new in the GTA. Fewer Taskers means your offer actually gets read instead of sitting behind two hundred others — and the people here first will hold the first reviews.

Every word of that is true, and it is the argument no big platform can copy.
