What changes a snow-clearing quote in Toronto

Half of this work is a house with no driveway

Across the old city — the Annex, Little Italy, Leslieville, much of Parkdale — the house meets the sidewalk with steps and a short front walk, and the car lives at the curb on a permit. There is no apron to blade. The work is the steps, the walk, and digging a permit-parked car out of the ridge the street plow left along the curb, which is a shovelling job with a different price shape than a driveway.

The mutual drive belongs to both of you

Semi-detached streets in Riverdale, Dovercourt and the Junction share a single strip of pavement between two houses, half of it on each title. Neither side can push snow onto the other half without blocking a neighbour, and there is no bank to push into because the strip runs wall to wall. Clearing a mutual drive is a carry to the front garden or the back yard rather than a push, and it is worth saying so in the post.

Whether the City clears your sidewalk depends on your street

Toronto clears a large share of residential sidewalks itself with mechanical equipment, and the exceptions are the narrow walks in the old city that the machines cannot fit along. Which side of that line your address falls on is published by the City, so look it up rather than assume: it decides whether you are hiring somebody for a walk, a sidewalk and steps, or only for the first and the last of those three.

By February there is nowhere left to put it

Old-city front gardens are a couple of metres deep, the boulevard is City property, and pushing snow onto the roadway is prohibited. On a twenty-foot lot that means the pile from the first storm is still there in March and every event after it goes higher rather than wider. The honest fix late in the season is relocating the bank to the back yard or hauling it off the property, which is a different job from a routine clear.

I have no driveway — what am I actually hiring for?

The front steps, the walk between them and the sidewalk, and usually the curb where the street plow buried the car you park on a permit. That is shovel work rather than blade work, so ask for a per-visit price on those three things and say how many steps there are.

Who clears a mutual driveway shared with a neighbour?

Whoever the two of you agree on. The strip is half on each title, so neither side may pile snow on the other half without blocking a car. Most of those streets end up splitting one visit between two households, which costs both of you less than two separate pieces of work would.

Does the City clear my sidewalk in Toronto?

On many residential streets it does, mechanically, and on the narrow old-city walks its equipment cannot fit along it does not. The City publishes which streets are on the route, so check your address before paying somebody to do work that is already being done for you.

Where can snow from my walk legally go?

Onto your own property — the front garden, the side yard, the back. Never onto the roadway, and never over the line onto a neighbour or onto their half of a mutual drive. A narrow lot runs out of room by midwinter, which is when people start paying to have the bank moved rather than added to.
