What does snow removal cost in Mississauga?

Snow clearing in Mississauga is quoted on area and access, and the city holds two very different versions of both. A double driveway north of the QEW is a parking pad worth of snow; a single lane running back to a garage in Streetsville is a long narrow run with nowhere for a truck to turn.

What changes a snow-clearing quote in Mississauga

A double driveway is a parking pad, not a path

The subdivisions north of the QEW were laid out around two-car garages, with driveways deep enough to hold a second pair of cars clear of the road. That is a surface the size of a small parking lot, and it is the number that sets the price far more than the size of the house behind it. Give the width in car widths and the depth in car lengths and you will get a firm offer instead of a range.

The village cores were not laid out for a plow

Streetsville, Port Credit, Clarkson and Malton have older lots where the driveway is one lane wide and runs the length of the house to a garage at the back. A truck with a blade has no room to turn and nowhere to push, so the work goes to a blower or a compact machine that walks the run twice. Saying the garage is at the rear changes which equipment turns up at your door.

Windrow help is registered in advance, not asked for in the storm

Mississauga runs a windrow assistance service for residents who cannot clear the ridge the plow leaves across a driveway themselves, and it works on registration, with terms and capacity the City sets each season. Check whether you qualify and whether registration is still open before the first storm, because the answer decides whether you are hiring for a whole driveway or only for the part the plow did not create.

A lot fronting an arterial gets the heavier ridge

Houses facing Eglinton, Britannia, Derry or Burnhamthorpe sit on roads that are plowed early, wide and fast, and the ridge left across those driveway mouths is denser and higher than the one on an interior crescent. It is also the ridge with nowhere to go back to, because the roadway is off limits, so it has to be carried onto your own frontage instead of pushed a metre and forgotten.

Questions

Snow removal & plowing in Mississauga

The answers that are specific to this city — the general ones live on the category page.

What is the most useful thing to put in the post?

The driveway in car widths and car lengths, and where the garage sits. Area sets the time and the garage position decides whether a blade or a blower does the work. A photo taken from the street beats any description, and most Mississauga taskers will quote straight from one.

Why is a Streetsville driveway priced differently?

Because it is one lane wide and long, with a garage at the back and no turning room. A pickup carrying a plow cannot service that, so the job goes to a machine that walks the length twice. The same volume of snow, different equipment, and the time is what you are paying for.

Does the City clear the ridge across my driveway?

Only for registered residents under its windrow assistance service, and both the terms and the registration window are set by the City each season. Check the current rules before winter rather than after the first storm, because they change what you actually need to hire a tasker to do.

Can a tasker push snow onto the road?

No. Pushing snow onto a roadway is prohibited, and on an arterial like Derry or Britannia it is dangerous as well. Everything cleared has to land on your own frontage, which is why lots with a narrow side yard run out of somewhere to put it before winter has finished.

Should I book a season or post per storm?

Seasonal if the driveway has to be clear before a commute every time, per storm if you can wait for daylight and only care about the big ones. A seasonal price also buys a place on somebody route, which matters more in a city this wide than most people expect.
